Savannah Challenger – Sumit Nagal Wins, Ram Exits

Former India No1 Sumit Nagal defeats Wu Tung-lin while Ram suffers his Eleventh consecutive Singles loss for the Year

 

It was expected to be a tough match for Sumit Nagal, who is making a comeback in the ATP circuit after a short Injury break. Tung-lin was in red hot form winning the challenger event in Talahassee, he also has a 25k future title in the year.

But Sumit Nagal had different plans as he broke Tung-lin serve twice in the opening set itself to make the score 4-0 before even the taiwanese could realise anything. Sumit closed the set 6-2 with an astonishing 85% first serve percentage and winning 31 of the 50 points in the set.

He now moves in the second round of the Savannah Challenger, where he played the last time this tournament was held in 2019 making it to the round 2

In the second set Tung-lin showed his form and came back to lead 5-1 giving a similar experience to Nagal as he got in the first set. The Indian made spirited fightback and didnt let Tung-lin win any game henceforth. Sumit made 1-5 to 7-5 breaking his serve three times while holding his each time.

Sumit closed the match 6-2, 7-5 in a match which went for 100 minutes. This was their first ever meeting.

Sumit now runs into Jack Sock, who is former World Rank 8 and is on a comback trail. Jack is the fourth seed in the tournament. Four of the Eight seed have already exited the tornament and it will be interesting to see what gameplan does Sumit come in with to tackle Jack. It will thier first meeting.

Ram Suffers Yet Another First Round Exit

India No1 Ramkumar Ramanathan suffered his eleventh straight singles loss of the year. He is yet to win a single match on the ATP circuit this year. Ramkumar who has been struggling to make it past the first hurdle was in for a difficult match against JJ Wolf, the sixth seed. Ram was down 0-3 in no time in the first set but took the set to tie-breaker. He lost the tie-breaker 4-7.

In the second set it was a different Ram all together, he was bagled by the opponent. Ram had five double faults in the set and eight overall in the match which didnt help. Ram is playing the next two weeks as well before going in for the French open Qualifying.

In Doubles Ram & Purav are yet to play their first match. The other Indian pair of Anirudh Chandrasekar & VS Prashanth made a first round exit against top seeds.
