In a heartbreaking turn of events at the ongoing ISSF Junior World Championship, Lima, Umesh Choudhary’s hopes for a podium finish were dashed after he was docked two crucial points for “reporting late by 10 minutes.”
The penalty had a devastating impact on his overall
standings, effectively sabotaging what could have been a potential medal-winning performance.
Umesh delivered an impressive performance in the qualification stage, scoring a commendable 580 and playing a key role in helping India secure the team gold in the 10m Air Pistol Junior event.
He looked poised for individual glory with such a strong showing, raising hopes for another medal.
In the finals, his first shot registered a 7.4 (actual shot being 9.4).
Though he tried to compensate for this penalty with some consistent shooting, it still was not enough for him to secure himself in the medal positions.
In the eight-shooter finals, Umesh bowed out at the
sixth position. Had it not been for the penalty, he could have been in third place.
The final scorecard of the 10m Air Pistol Jr. reflected a remark, “Athlete 1412 CHOUDHARY Umesh (IND) – ISSF Rule 6.17.1.3 Late reporting to the preparation area.”
The ISSF rule book states that athletes must report to the Finals Range Preparation Area at least 30 minutes before the start time.
A two (2) point/hit penalty will be deducted
from the score of the first match shot/series if the athlete does not report on time.
Fortunately, Umesh was allowed to compete in the finals and not penalised under 6.17.1.4 (Late Arrival), which states any finalist who does not report to the preparation area within 10 minutes after the Reporting Time may not start and will be recorded as the first eliminated athlete and shown as DNS.
Umesh will not be seen in action for the 10m Air Pistol Mixed Team event and will be returning with the gold medal won in the team event.
This missed opportunity serves as a reminder of how even small setbacks can have a significant impact in high-stakes competitions.
This incident will likely fuel his determination
in future events. Umesh’s talent is undeniable, and setbacks like these may just push him harder toward future success. Those days are not far when we will see him as a consistent name in the ISSF circuit, eventually trying to replicate what Saurabh Choudhary and Sarabjot Singh have established.
