The India U18 Women’s Hockey Team produced its best performance of the series to defeat Australia U18 Women 4-1 in the fourth and final match of the exposure tour in Bhopal on Wednesday.

After a challenging series against a physically strong Australian side, the Indian youngsters signed off with an emphatic victory that showcased their attacking quality, resilience, and growing confidence ahead of the U18 Asia Cup later this month in Japan.

Played at the Udhav Das Mehta (Bhai Ji) Central SAI Centre in Bhopal, the match saw India recover from an early setback before completely taking control across the remaining three quarters. Captain Sweety Kujur, Diya, Priyanka Minz, and Nausheen Naz were all on the scoresheet as the hosts secured a memorable win despite Australia clinching the overall four-match series 3-1.

The result offered a timely confidence boost for the Indian side, especially after narrowly losing earlier matches in the series. More importantly, it underlined the progress the young squad has made through the exposure tour against one of the stronger junior hockey systems in the world. Australia once again began aggressively and took the lead in the opening quarter through Aurora Kovacevich in the eighth minute. The visitors looked sharper in the early exchanges and used their pace effectively in transition to put pressure on the Indian defence.

For a brief period, India appeared unsettled under Australia’s pressing structure. However, unlike some earlier matches in the series, the hosts responded quickly instead of allowing the game to drift away.

India’s equaliser arrived in the 13th minute through captain Sweety Kujur, who once again demonstrated why she remains one of the key figures in this junior setup. Her goal not only restored parity but also shifted momentum decisively towards the home side before the first quarter ended. The equaliser visibly lifted India’s confidence, with the midfield beginning to control possession better and the forwards finding more spaces inside the Australian circle.

The second quarter saw India build sustained attacking pressure, and the hosts were rewarded in the 25th minute when Diya found the back of the net to hand India a 2-1 lead. The goal came after a strong spell where India moved the ball quicker through central areas and looked far more composed in possession than they had earlier in the series. Australia struggled to regain rhythm as India’s pressing intensity improved significantly.

By halftime, India had established control both territorially and mentally. The third quarter further highlighted India’s dominance. Priyanka Minz extended the lead in the 44th minute with a well-taken finish, giving the hosts breathing space and placing Australia under significant pressure for the first time in the series.

India’s defensive structure also looked much more disciplined in the second half. The backline stayed compact, midfield recoveries improved, and Australia found far fewer opportunities to attack freely compared to the opening quarter.

The final quarter saw India continue attacking rather than protecting the lead. That aggressive approach was rewarded when Nausheen Naz added India’s fourth goal in the 50th minute, effectively ending the contest. The goal capped a highly impressive all-round performance from the Indian side, which combined structured defending with quick attacking transitions throughout the second half.

Australia attempted to respond late in the game but struggled to break through India’s defensive organisation. The hosts managed the final minutes confidently to complete one of their strongest performances at the junior level in recent months. Although Australia won the overall series 3-1, the final result could prove highly valuable for India heading into the U18 Asia Cup in Japan. The improvement shown by the Indian side over the course of the series was particularly encouraging. After struggling in phases earlier, the team displayed far better composure and tactical maturity in the final game.

Several players also stepped up individually. Captain Sweety Kujur led from the front throughout the tour, while Priyanka Minz and Nausheen Naz consistently looked dangerous in attack. Diya’s performance in midfield and transition phases also stood out during the final encounter.

India’s junior women’s hockey structure has produced strong talent over the last decade, and performances like this suggest another promising group may be emerging. The team showed character by bouncing back strongly after earlier setbacks in the series. More importantly, they demonstrated the ability to adapt tactically against a physically superior Australian side a critical quality at the international level.

With the U18 Asia Cup approaching rapidly, this victory arrives at an ideal moment psychologically.

The final scoreline may not change the series result, but for the Indian camp, the performance itself will likely matter more. Ending the tour with a commanding 4-1 victory against Australia provides momentum, belief, and valuable match experience ahead of one of the biggest junior tournaments of the year.
