The Hockey India women’s setup continues its transition phase with a blend of established internationals and emerging prospects named in the 22-member squad for the upcoming Australia tour in Perth from May 26 to 30.

The four-match series, scheduled at the Perth Hockey Stadium, comes at a critical stage in India’s calendar as the team prepares for the FIH Hockey Women’s Nations Cup 2025–26 in Auckland next month. With matches scheduled on May 26, 27, 29, and 30, the tour offers India an important opportunity to test combinations, build rhythm, and expose younger players to high-intensity international hockey.

Midfield dynamo Salima Tete will captain the side, continuing her leadership role in a squad that still retains a strong experienced core despite the inclusion of several fresh faces. A bronze medallist at both the 2022 Commonwealth Games and Asian Games, Salima has gradually evolved into one of the team’s central figures. Her ability to control transitions, press aggressively, and maintain tempo makes her crucial to India’s structure, particularly against physically dominant opponents like Australia. Alongside her, the squad retains experienced names including veteran goalkeeper Savita, defender Sushila Chanu Pukhrambam, attacker Navneet Kaur, and Lalremsiami.

Their presence is expected to provide stability as India integrate newer players into the senior environment. The inclusion of seasoned campaigners also reflects India’s balancing act ahead of the Nations Cup. While long-term squad development remains a priority, results in the immediate cycle remain equally important.

One of the most notable aspects of the squad is the continued investment in emerging talent. Players like Sonam, Hina Bano, and Lalthantluangi have been rewarded with opportunities after impressive domestic and junior-level performances. Both Sonam and Hina Bano are yet to make their senior international debuts, making the Australia tour a potentially defining moment in their careers. Defender Shilpi Dabas has also earned her maiden senior team call-up, highlighting the management’s intent to widen the player pool ahead of a demanding international cycle.

India’s coaching staff has consistently emphasized the need to build depth across all departments, particularly after the intense scheduling demands of recent years exposed concerns around squad rotation and fatigue management. The Australia tour therefore becomes more than just a preparatory assignment it serves as a platform for talent evaluation under pressure.

India head into the series after an encouraging tour of Argentina earlier this year, where they secured two wins from four matches against high-quality opposition. While consistency remained an issue across the series, the team showed improved resilience and competitiveness, particularly in transitional phases and defensive structure. The performances offered signs of progress following an inconsistent 2025 season. Since returning from Argentina, the squad has been training at the national camp in SAI Bengaluru, focusing on tactical structure, penalty corner efficiency, and physical conditioning.

Chief coach Sjoerd Marijne stressed that maintaining the performance levels shown in Argentina remains the immediate objective.

“We have picked a squad with a good balance of experienced and young players, some of whom will get their first minutes at the international level. It’s important to keep developing players, and the best way to do that is under pressure in international matches,” Marijne said.

His comments underline the management’s long-term approach, where exposure to elite competition is viewed as essential for player growth.

The defensive setup will once again rely heavily on Savita’s leadership and shot-stopping abilities, with Bichu Devi providing depth in goalkeeping. In defence, the combination of experienced players like Nikki Pradhan and Sushila Chanu alongside younger names such as Lalthantluangi and Shilpi Dabas will be closely monitored. Australia’s pace and physicality will provide a serious test of composure and defensive organisation. The midfield remains India’s strongest area structurally. Salima Tete, Neha, Lalremsiami, and Sunelita Toppo bring energy and pressing intensity, while Sonam’s inclusion adds an interesting developmental dimension.

In attack, much responsibility will rest on Navneet Kaur, who continues to be India’s most reliable goal-scoring option. The forward line also includes Baljeet Kaur, Deepika, Annu, Ishika, Hina Bano, and Rutuja Pisal, offering a mix of speed and direct attacking play.

Ultimately, the Australia tour is less about immediate results and more about preparing for the Nations Cup, where India will aim to secure promotion opportunities and rebuild momentum internationally. The squad selection reflects that wider objective retain enough experience to stay competitive while gradually introducing the next generation into the senior structure.

For India, the coming weeks could shape not only their Nations Cup campaign but also the broader direction of the women’s program heading into the next Olympic cycle.
