The India U18 Men’s Hockey Team signed off their four-match series against Australia with a hard-fought 3-3 draw in Bhopal on Wednesday, concluding an encouraging exposure tour that showcased both the promise and resilience of the young Indian squad.

Played at the Udhav Das Mehta (Bhai Ji) Central SAI Centre in Madhya Pradesh, the final match of the series once again highlighted the competitive intensity between the two teams, with India twice taking the lead before Australia fought back to level the contest late in the game. By the end of the tour, India finished with one victory, two draws, and one defeat against a physically strong Australian side a respectable outcome for a junior team preparing for upcoming international competitions.

More importantly, the series provided valuable high-pressure experience for several emerging players who continue to form part of India’s growing junior hockey structure.

India began the match with clear attacking intent and quickly established control during the opening quarter. The hosts opened the scoring in the 10th minute through Karan Gautam, who converted a penalty corner with confidence to hand India an early advantage. The drag-flick was executed sharply, reflecting the growing efficiency India displayed on set-pieces throughout the series.

Just four minutes later, India doubled the lead through Ben Siddharth after a well-worked attacking move. The field goal came following sustained pressure inside the Australian circle, and India suddenly found themselves firmly in command at 2-0. The aggressive start reflected the confidence India had gained after earlier performances in the series, particularly following their dominant 6-3 victory in the second match.

Australia, however, once again demonstrated why their junior hockey system remains among the strongest in the world.

After a difficult opening quarter, the visitors gradually regained composure and began increasing the intensity of their pressing game. Australia’s comeback was led by Jet Johnstone, who emerged as one of the key figures in the contest. The Australian forward reduced the deficit in the 18th minute with a well-taken field goal before scoring again in the 25th minute to complete the comeback and level the score at 2-2 before halftime.

India’s defensive structure, which had looked solid during the opening exchanges, struggled momentarily against Australia’s quicker ball movement and physical pressure in midfield. The equaliser shifted momentum heading into the break and ensured the second half would become another tightly contested battle between the two sides.

Ketan Kushwaha Leads from the Front

The third quarter turned into a highly tactical phase of the game, with both teams attempting to control possession and avoid defensive mistakes. India gradually began regaining territory and eventually restored their lead in the 40th minute through captain Ketan Kushwaha. Kushwaha, who has consistently impressed throughout the series, showed excellent composure inside the circle to finish clinically and make it 3-2 for the hosts.

The goal once again highlighted India’s attacking quality during transitions. Whenever the team managed to move the ball quickly through midfield, Australia’s defensive line looked vulnerable. As the final quarter began, India appeared capable of holding on for another victory.

To India’s credit, the team defended with discipline for much of the closing stages despite increasing Australian pressure. The backline stayed compact, while the midfield worked hard to disrupt Australia’s build-up play. However, as the clock ticked down, the visitors continued pushing aggressively in search of another equaliser.

Their persistence was eventually rewarded in the 57th minute when Andrew Faulds scored from open play to make it 3-3 with just three minutes remaining.

The late goal denied India a series-clinching win but did little to diminish what had been another strong performance from the hosts. Both teams had opportunities during the final moments, but neither side could find a decisive fourth goal as the match ended level.  While the series officially ended with Australia holding a slight edge overall, the performances from the Indian side offered several positives.

The team also demonstrated the ability to compete physically against one of the world’s strongest hockey systems at junior level an important developmental step for young players preparing for future international tournaments. Captain Ketan Kushwaha emerged as one of the standout performers of the series, while players like Karan Gautam and Ben Siddharth also delivered impactful performances in crucial moments.

Perhaps the biggest takeaway for the Indian coaching staff will be the team’s adaptability. After struggling during phases of the opening match, the players responded strongly across the remainder of the series and consistently improved tactically against high-quality opposition.

The final day of the tour also saw the India U18 Women’s Team defeat Australia 4-1 in their final match, ensuring both Indian junior teams ended the series on a positive note. For Hockey India, the exposure tour appears to have achieved its broader objective giving young players valuable international match experience against elite opposition before major junior competitions later this year.

The scorelines themselves were competitive, but more importantly, the series showed that India’s junior hockey pipeline continues to produce technically gifted and mentally resilient players capable of competing against top international teams.
