Indian football will welcome a new force to the top tier next season. Diamond Harbour FC, the rapidly rising Kolkata-based club, have officially secured promotion to the Indian Super League for the 2026-27 season after a dominant campaign in the Indian Football League (IFL), completing one of the fastest climbs ever witnessed in Indian football.

Founded only in 2020, the club needed just six years to reach the summit of the domestic football pyramid. Their qualification now means Kolkata will have three clubs in the ISL next season East Bengal, Mohun Bagan Super Giant and now Diamond Harbour FC. For a club that barely existed half a decade ago, the achievement is extraordinary.

But for those who closely followed their journey this season, the promotion felt increasingly inevitable. Under experienced Spanish coach Kibu Vicuna, Diamond Harbour combined tactical discipline, attacking consistency and squad depth to emerge as one of the standout teams of the campaign. Vicuna, who has already enjoyed success in Indian football previously, brought structure and clarity to a side that quickly established itself among the strongest in the league.

The squad itself blended experienced Indian footballers with impactful foreign signings. Players like Jobby Justin, Halicharan Narzary and goalkeeper Dheeraj Singh brought valuable top-level experience. Dheeraj, notably, remains one of India’s most recognised young goalkeepers after representing the country at the FIFA U-17 World Cup in 2017.

Alongside them, foreign stars such as Hugo Diaz and Luka Majcen played crucial roles throughout the campaign. The season, however, did not begin smoothly.

Diamond Harbour suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat against Sreenidi Deccan FC in their opening match, briefly raising doubts about how quickly the newly assembled side would settle into the competition. Those doubts disappeared rapidly.

That opening-day loss turned out to be their only defeat across the entire first round of the league season. From there, Diamond Harbour produced one of the most consistent campaigns in the competition, collecting 22 points from nine matches through seven victories and one draw. The dominance allowed them to finish five points clear of second-placed Shillong Lajong before entering the Promotion Round.

Because points from the opening stage carried forward, Diamond Harbour entered the decisive phase of the season with a significant advantage over their rivals.

Even though they suffered another defeat once again against Sreenidi Deccan they remained firmly in control of the promotion race.

Crucial victories against Chanmari FC and Rajasthan United eventually confirmed their place in the ISL. The club’s final match of the campaign perfectly reflected the resilience that defined their season. Trailing against Dempo late in the game, Diamond Harbour once again relied on Hugo Diaz, who scored a dramatic stoppage-time equaliser to rescue a draw and ensure the team finished their historic campaign on a positive note.

Diaz’s influence throughout the season cannot be overstated. The Spaniard finished as the joint-highest goalscorer of the IFL alongside Marcus Joseph of Dempo, consistently delivering goals during decisive moments. His partnership with the attacking unit became one of the biggest reasons behind Diamond Harbour’s relentless consistency in front of goal.

Remarkably, the club failed to score in only one match all season their opening defeat against Sreenidi.

That attacking reliability became a defining feature of Vicuna’s system. Yet the foundations of this promotion campaign were arguably laid much earlier during the Durand Cup 2025. Diamond Harbour emerged as the surprise package of the historic tournament, defeating established ISL clubs Jamshedpur FC and East Bengal in the quarterfinals and semifinals respectively to reach the final.

Although they eventually lost the title clash against NorthEast United, their fearless performances attracted nationwide attention and signalled that the club was capable of competing at a much higher level. The Durand Cup run transformed perceptions around the team.

No longer viewed merely as an ambitious lower-division side, Diamond Harbour started being discussed as a genuine future ISL club. Now, that future has officially arrived. Their rise also represents something larger for Indian football. For years, Indian football has struggled to create pathways for ambitious smaller clubs to rise sustainably through the system. Diamond Harbour’s journey offers an example of how proper planning, coaching stability and smart recruitment can rapidly elevate a club through the domestic structure.

The challenge now, of course, becomes far greater.

The Indian Super League operates at a significantly higher tactical, physical and financial level compared to the IFL. Competing consistently against established clubs like Mohun Bagan, East Bengal, Mumbai City and FC Goa will test the squad in completely different ways. But if this season proved anything, it is that Diamond Harbour FC are not intimidated by bigger names or bigger stages. In just six years, they have climbed from a newly formed club to the highest level of Indian football.

And based on what they showed throughout this remarkable campaign, they may not be entering the ISL merely to participate.
