After Dispatching Seed14 Karan meets World Champion from Korea in Fencing World Championships

Young 23 year old Karan Singh has entered round two defeating Kokubo at the World Championships

A 24 member Indian contingent is participating in the World Championships in Egypt which is happening from 15-23 may 2022

Karan who has been showing glimpses of good form of late made it to the main draw on the back of winning three of the six qualifying matches.

The 90th ranked fencer from India scored an upset win over Mao Kokubo from Japan in a thrilling fashion. He defeated the 14th seed Japanese 15-11 in the Round of 128

He next faces the defending world champion Oh Sanguk from South Korea, he is currently world rank 4.

The other three Indians in the Sabre event however failed to make it to the main round as Gisho (Rk72), Abhay (Rk87), Vishal (Rk89).

While it was Karan who is making waves in the Men Sabre event it was a teenager Taniksha Khatri who shined in the Women Epee event

Playing through the qualifying she won four of her five matches to make the main draw.

Although she lost a close one to Violeta from Dominica Republic 14-15 in round of 128.

Ena and Mumtaj who were the others in qualifying were placed 96th and 147th respectively.

In the Mens Epee Udaivir Singh who is currently ranked 139 defeated former world cup champion Jiri Beran from Czech Republic 15-14 to move into round two. He will next face the seventh seed Bardenett in second round

But in women foil all the Indians got eliminated in the qualifying pool itself

Bhavani Devi the Tokyo olympian won four of her five matches in the qualifying and made it directly into second round in women Sabre event

The Fencing World Championships take place annually but the last two editions were cancelled due to COVID-19. India are yet to win a medal at the worlds.
