Tamil Nadu’s Vithya Ramraj delivered a commanding performance to clinch gold in the women’s 400m at the Indian Open, underlining her consistency across rounds and reaffirming her status as one of India’s leading quarter-milers.

Clocking 53.31 seconds in the final, Vithya registered the fastest time across both A and B finals, capping off a near-flawless outing.

Her performance stood out not just for the gold medal, but for the manner in which she controlled the competition from the heats through to the final. Earlier in the day, Vithya had already set the tone by recording 53.98 seconds in the qualifying round—the only sub-54-second effort across all heats. That early marker established her as the athlete to beat, and she carried that momentum into the final with authority.

A Race Defined by Margins

The final itself was closely contested behind the winner. Karnataka’s Vijayakumari secured the silver medal with a time of 53.55 seconds, while experienced quarter-miler M R Poovamma finished third in 53.61 seconds. The narrow gap of just 0.06 seconds between silver and bronze highlighted the competitive depth in the field.

Just outside the podium was JSW’s Rashdeep Kaur, who delivered a strong run in her respective final but missed out on a medal by the slimmest of margins finishing fourth overall, just 0.01 seconds behind Poovamma. Such fine margins are often decisive in quarter-mile races, and Rashdeep’s performance, though off the podium, reinforced her growing presence in the national circuit.

What separated Vithya Ramraj from the rest of the field was her race management. The 400m demands a delicate balance between controlled aggression in the first 200m and endurance in the closing stretch. Vithya executed this balance effectively, maintaining rhythm through the back straight before accelerating decisively in the final 100m.

Her ability to sustain pace without tying up in the closing stages was particularly notable. While others showed signs of fatigue, Vithya maintained her form and stride frequency, ensuring a clean and efficient finish. This level of execution reflects not just physical preparedness but also tactical maturity an essential component at the elite level.

Selection Implications for Relay Team

Beyond individual medals, the Indian Open carried additional significance, with the Athletics Federation of India (AFI) using these performances as a benchmark for selecting the women’s 4x400m relay squad. Traditionally, relay selections have drawn heavily from national camp athletes, but the results from this meet present a different narrative. Notably, none of the top four finishers were from the national camp setup. This raises important questions about current form, selection dynamics, and the effectiveness of centralized training compared to decentralized preparation.

For selectors, the data from this meet offers a clear performance-based hierarchy. Vithya Ramraj’s consistency across rounds, combined with strong timings from Vijayakumari and Poovamma, places them firmly in contention for relay spots. At the same time, the absence of campers in the top positions suggests a need to reassess selection criteria with greater emphasis on current performance rather than training base alone.

The race also highlighted the depth in Indian women’s quarter-mile running. With four athletes finishing within a narrow time band and multiple sub-54-second performances across rounds, the event continues to be one of India’s strongest track disciplines.

However, the lack of a clear sub-53-second performance remains an area of concern, especially when viewed against continental and global benchmarks. While Vithya’s 53.31 is competitive domestically, bridging the gap at the Asian and World level will require further improvement.

For Vithya Ramraj, this victory adds to a growing body of consistent performances and strengthens her position heading into a crucial season. With major international competitions on the horizon, maintaining this level and pushing closer to the 52-second mark will be key. For Indian athletics as a whole, the Indian Open has provided both clarity and questions. While emerging and established athletes outside the camp have stepped up, the performance gap within the system is now more visible.

In the end, the headline remains clear: Vithya Ramraj dominated the field with authority. But beyond the gold medal, her performance has sparked a broader conversation about form, selection, and the evolving landscape of Indian women’s 400m running.
