India’s boxing contingent delivered one of its most impressive days at the Asian Boxing Championships 2026 in Ulaanbaatar, headlined by a sensational victory from Havaldar Vishvanath Suresh, who outclassed reigning world champion and World No. 1 Sanzhar Tashkenbay of Kazakhstan to book his place in the semifinals.
The 5-0 unanimous decision win in the men’s 50kg category was not just a personal milestone for Vishvanath, but a statement for Indian boxing on the continental stage. Facing one of the most decorated names in the division, the Indian flyweight displayed tactical maturity, precision, and composure across all three rounds.
Vishvanath’s Breakthrough Moment
Coming into the bout, Tashkenbay was widely regarded as one of the favourites for the title, given his recent world championship success and consistent performances on the international circuit. However, Vishvanath approached the contest with clarity and discipline.
From the opening round, he established control through sharp footwork and well-timed combinations. His ability to maintain distance while landing clean scoring punches neutralised Tashkenbay’s aggressive approach. As the bout progressed, Vishvanath’s confidence grew, and he dictated the tempo with increasing authority.
By the final round, the outcome appeared clear, with all five judges scoring the bout in his favour. The result marks one of the biggest wins of his career and firmly establishes him as a serious contender in the flyweight division.

In the women’s 65kg category, Ankushita Boro continued India’s strong showing with a composed 4-1 victory over Kazakhstan’s Laura Yessenkeldi. Boro demonstrated control throughout the bout, effectively managing distance and landing scoring punches with consistency.
Her performance reflected tactical discipline, particularly in the middle rounds where she built a decisive lead. The win secures her a place in the semifinals and guarantees at least a bronze medal.
However, a much tougher challenge awaits. Boro will face Chinese Taipei’s Nien-Chin Chen in the semifinals—a highly accomplished opponent with a gold medal at the 2025 World Boxing Finals and a bronze at the Paris 2024 Olympics. The bout is expected to test Boro’s ability to handle elite-level pressure and adapt to a technically superior opponent.

India’s strong run in the men’s division continued with Narender delivering a dominant 5-0 win over Orkhan Aghayev of the UAE. The bout was largely one-sided, with Narender controlling proceedings through effective aggression and clean punching.
His ability to combine defensive awareness with offensive output ensured he stayed ahead on all judges’ scorecards. With this victory, Narender also advances to the semifinals, adding to India’s growing medal prospects.
In the next round, he will face China’s Bayikewuzi Danabieke, a seasoned competitor with medals at both the Asian Games and World Championships. The matchup presents a significant challenge, but Narender’s current form suggests he is well-prepared for the contest.
While the day brought multiple successes, it also saw Aditya bow out of the tournament in the men’s 65kg category. He suffered a 0-5 defeat to Uzbekistan’s Abdulloh Madaminov in the quarterfinals. Despite the loss, Aditya’s campaign highlighted the depth of competition at the Asian level, where even early-round bouts often feature world-class opponents.
With Vishvanath, Ankushita, and Narender all progressing to the semifinals, India’s campaign at the championships is gaining significant momentum. Each semifinal berth ensures a medal, but more importantly, provides an opportunity to push for higher podium finishes.
The performances also reflect a broader trend in Indian boxing greater consistency against top-tier international opponents. Victories over boxers from traditional powerhouses like Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan underline the progress made in recent years.
Vishvanath Suresh’s victory over the world No. 1 stands out as the defining moment of the day. Such wins not only boost individual confidence but also elevate the perception of Indian boxers on the global stage.
As the tournament moves into its निर्णायक stages, India will look to convert these semifinal appearances into finals and potential gold medals. The challenges ahead will be tougher, but the performances so far suggest that the contingent is well-equipped to compete at the highest level.
In Ulaanbaatar, Indian boxing has not just progressed it has made a statement.
