The Indian junior women’s hockey team began their Four Nations Tournament campaign in Rosario, Argentina, with a thrilling 2-1 victory over Chile on May 25.

In a contest that tested the mettle and resolve of the young Indian side, it was a strong second-half performance that turned the tide in their favour.

The match didn’t begin in India’s favour, as Chile drew first blood with an early goal, catching the Indian defence off guard. The early setback, however, only steeled the resolve of the Indian team. The girls, fondly referred to as the “Junior Sherniyan,” displayed grit and tactical discipline to claw their way back into the game.

It was in the third quarter that India finally broke through. In the 39th minute, midfielder Sukhveer Kaur showcased excellent awareness and composure to slot home the equaliser, breathing new life into the Indian campaign. The goal was a result of sustained pressure and sharp passing sequences that had begun to unsettle the Chilean defence.

With the game poised at 1-1 and time ticking away, it was Kanika Siwach who rose to the occasion. In the 58th minute, just moments before full-time, Kanika produced a moment of magic with a clinical finish that beat the Chilean goalkeeper and sealed the game in India’s favour.

Kanika’s performance held extra significance — not just for her individual brilliance, but because of the legacy she represents. A product of the famed Pritam Siwach Hockey Academy, Kanika is part of a remarkable hockey family. Her mother, Pritam Siwach, is a former India international and one of the most respected coaches in Indian women’s hockey.

Her father, a former hockey player himself, co-runs the academy in Sonipat, Haryana, which has become a cradle for nurturing young talent, especially from underprivileged backgrounds. Both Kanika and her brother Yashdeep Siwach have donned India colours, making the Siwach family a unique pillar in Indian hockey’s grassroots movement.

The Four Nations Tournament, held from May 25 to June 2 in Rosario, features Argentina, Uruguay, Chile, and India, and serves as a crucial preparatory platform for the upcoming FIH Junior Women’s World Cup in December. India’s fixtures in the opening round include Chile (May 25), Uruguay (May 26), and hosts Argentina (May 28).

The Indian team is led by goalkeeper Nidhi, who dons the captain’s armband, while forward Hina Bano has been named vice-captain. Nidhi’s leadership from the back provides much-needed stability to the defence, while Hina’s pace and attacking prowess will be instrumental as India takes on more challenging opposition in the coming days.

This win over Chile is not just about three points — it is a statement of intent from a young squad eager to make a mark on the world stage. The balance of experience from tournaments like the recent Junior Asia Cup, and the hunger of young players like Sukhveer and Kanika, makes this Indian team a formidable outfit.

With Uruguay up next on May 26, the Junior Sherniyan will look to build on this momentum and continue their fine form. A good result there could set up a high-stakes clash against Argentina, the tournament hosts and perennial hockey powerhouses.

As the countdown to the Junior World Cup intensifies, performances like these not only inspire belief in the squad but also serve as a testament to the silent, steady work being done at grassroots academies across India. For now, the Indian camp will celebrate a hard-earned win, but eyes are already set on the next challenge — Uruguay.
