The All India Tennis Association (AITA) on Tuesday named a refreshed yet experienced squad for the upcoming Billie Jean King Cup Asia-Oceania Group I tournament, with 21-year-old Vaishnavi Adkar earning her maiden national call-up.
The competition will be held at the DLTA Stadium in New Delhi from April 7 to 11, placing India on home soil once again in one of the most significant weeks on the women’s tennis calendar. The five-member squad, selected by the AITA’s Professional Selection Committee based on rankings, performance, and availability, includes Sahaja Yamalapalli, Vaishnavi Adkar, Shrivalli Bhamidipaty, Rutuja Bhosale, and Ankita Raina, with Vaidehee Chaudhari named as reserve. Vishal Uppal will continue as team captain, while Radhika Kanitkar has been appointed coach.
A Breakthrough Moment for Vaishnavi
Vaishnavi’s inclusion marks the headline development in this announcement. The Pune-born player forced her way into contention after a remarkable runner-up finish at the ITF W100 event in Bengaluru last month, where she competed as a wildcard entrant. That run not only elevated her profile but also reshaped the domestic hierarchy.
Her performance in Bengaluru was historic. Vaishnavi became the first Indian woman since Sania Mirza in 2009 to reach the final of a W100 or higher-level event. The result propelled her from a ranking of 690 to 466 in the WTA standings one of the most dramatic ranking surges by an Indian player in recent years.

Currently ranked 468, she now sits as India No. 2, behind only Sahaja Yamalapalli (World No. 393). The trajectory reflects both form and confidence. Having recently joined the Rohan Bopanna Tennis Academy, Vaishnavi appears to have found stability in her training ecosystem at a critical juncture in her career.
Her call-up is not symbolic. It is performance-driven.
Singles Core: Responsibility on the New Guard
With India hosting the event, expectations are clear. The singles responsibility will largely rest on Sahaja, Vaishnavi, and Shrivalli Bhamidipaty (World No. 520), who currently stands as India No. 3. Sahaja brings composure and consistency at the top of the lineup. Vaishnavi offers attacking flair and momentum. Shrivalli, who was instrumental in last year’s campaign, provides reliability under pressure. The trio forms a balanced singles unit capable of handling the round-robin intensity.
In last year’s Asia-Oceania Group I ties held in Pune, Shrivalli was unbeaten across five singles rubbers — a statistic that underscores her value in the format. India will expect similar resilience this time around.

The doubles selection has prompted strategic conversation. Ankita Raina (World No. 169 in doubles) has been preferred over Prarthana Thombare (World No. 157), signaling the management’s emphasis on team chemistry and tactical alignment rather than pure ranking hierarchy. Ankita is likely to partner Rutuja Bhosale (World No. 122), currently India’s top-ranked doubles player. Their potential pairing brings a blend of baseline stability and net aggression crucial in tight BJK Cup ties where doubles often determine overall outcomes.
Shrivalli also remains a capable doubles option, offering flexibility should matchups require tactical reshuffling.
Tournament Format and Stakes
The Asia-Oceania Group I event will feature India, Indonesia, Korea Republic, New Zealand, Mongolia, and Thailand in a single round-robin format. Every tie carries weight, as only the top two teams will earn promotion to the Billie Jean King Cup Play-offs later in the year.
Last season, India finished second behind New Zealand, securing a Play-offs berth for only the second time in history. Under captain Vishal Uppal’s guidance, India defeated Korea, Thailand, Chinese Taipei, and Hong Kong in an impressive run.
However, the Play-offs proved challenging. India fell to Slovenia and the Netherlands in Bengaluru in November, missing the opportunity to advance to this year’s qualifiers. The experience highlighted the gap between Group I success and global-level contention.
The objective now is clear: return to the Play-offs and this time, go further.

The retention of Vishal Uppal as captain ensures continuity in leadership. His familiarity with the squad and understanding of the BJK Cup format remains an asset. Radhika Kanitkar’s appointment as coach adds another layer of technical oversight as India seeks marginal gains. The blend of experience and youth defines this squad. Ankita and Rutuja anchor the doubles unit. Sahaja and Shrivalli bring recent BJK Cup success. Vaishnavi represents upward momentum and generational transition.
Hosting the event at the DLTA Stadium provides India with environmental familiarity and crowd support. Conditions in Delhi often slower hard courts with variable bounce could favor India’s baseline-heavy style.
For Vaishnavi Adkar, the tournament represents both reward and test. Her rise has been rapid, but national duty introduces a different kind of pressure representing the tricolor in a team format where every match shapes collective destiny. For India, the 2026 Asia-Oceania Group I campaign is not just about qualification. It is about sustaining progress in women’s tennis building depth, nurturing emerging talent, and closing the gap at the international tier.
The squad announcement signals intent. Now, the execution begins in April.
