India’s campaign at the 2026 Squash World Championships Asia Qualifying event in Hong Kong saw contrasting outcomes on Wednesday, as Tanvi Khanna progressed to the quarterfinals with a commanding performance, while veteran Joshna Chinappa suffered an early exit.

With only one qualification spot available for the upcoming PSA World Championships, the stakes at the continental qualifier are exceptionally high. Every match carries knockout-level intensity, making consistency and composure critical.

Tanvi Khanna Makes Strong Start

Seeded fifth in the tournament, Tanvi Khanna began her campaign with a clinical straight-games victory over Macao’s Gigi Yeung. The Indian showed control from the outset, navigating the opening exchanges before gradually asserting dominance.

The first game was the most competitive, with Khanna edging it 11-9 after a closely fought battle. Once she secured the early lead, her confidence grew, and she raised her level significantly.

In the second game, Khanna tightened her control over rallies, using precise shot placement and effective court coverage to win 11-6. By the third game, she was firmly in command, dictating the tempo and limiting her opponent’s opportunities, closing it out 11-4.

The straight-games win not only reflects her current form but also her ability to manage pressure in crucial opening rounds, where early exits can derail campaigns.

Khanna now faces a significantly tougher challenge in the quarterfinals against Malaysia’s Ainaa Amani, the top seed in the tournament. Amani enters the match as one of the favourites, bringing both higher ranking and experience at this level.

For Khanna, the contest represents an opportunity to make a breakthrough. However, the format of the qualifying event adds to the challenge only the tournament winner secures a place at the PSA World Championships.

This makes the quarterfinal effectively a high-stakes encounter, where Khanna will need to elevate her performance further. Maintaining consistency in longer rallies, managing unforced errors, and executing under pressure will be key if she is to overcome the top seed.

In contrast to Khanna’s progress, experienced Indian player Joshna Chinappa saw her campaign come to an end in the opening round.

Facing Hong Kong’s Po Yui Kirstie Wong, Chinappa started strongly, taking the first game 12-10 in a closely contested battle. Her experience was evident in the early stages, as she managed key points effectively. However, the momentum shifted as the match progressed. Wong responded by increasing her intensity and controlling the pace of rallies. She took the second game 11-9, levelling the match and gaining confidence.

From that point onward, Wong dominated proceedings. Chinappa struggled to regain rhythm, and the Hong Kong player closed out the next two games 11-4 and 11-3 to secure the win. The defeat marks a disappointing end to Chinappa’s hopes of qualifying for the World Championships, highlighting the increasingly competitive nature of the Asian circuit.

Indian Presence in Men’s Draw

India does not have representation in the men’s singles qualifiers at this event, as several top players have already secured their spots for the PSA World Championships through rankings and previous performances.

Players such as Abhay Singh, Veer Chotrani, Ramit Tandon, and Velavan Senthilkumar have already qualified, ensuring Indian presence in the main event despite the absence from this qualifying draw.

The Asia Qualifying event is particularly demanding due to its winner-takes-all format. Unlike ranking-based qualification systems, this structure leaves no margin for error, requiring players to string together multiple high-level performances consecutively.

For Khanna, this means each match is effectively a must-win, with the level of opposition increasing at every stage.

Despite the challenges ahead, Khanna’s opening-round performance offers optimism. Her ability to control matches and close out games efficiently will be crucial as she faces higher-ranked opponents. A win over Ainaa Amani would not only propel her into the semifinals but also establish her as a serious contender for the lone qualification spot.

India’s fortunes at the Asian Qualifiers have been mixed so far, with Tanvi Khanna keeping hopes alive through a strong start, while Joshna Chinappa’s early exit underscores the unforgiving nature of the competition.

As Khanna prepares for her quarterfinal clash, the challenge intensifies. With a place at the World Championships on the line, she will need to deliver her best performance yet to continue her run and keep India’s qualification hopes alive.
