India’s national record holder Tajinderpal Singh Toor delivered an encouraging performance at the Open Throws Competition, registering a season-best throw of 20.51m to clinch the gold medal and signal a positive step in his comeback journey.

For the experienced Indian shot putter, the result carried significance beyond the medal. The mark represents only his second outdoor throw beyond 20 metres in the past two and a half years, highlighting a gradual return to form after a prolonged period affected by injuries and inconsistent performances.

With the Asian Games approaching, Toor’s performance provides a timely boost for Indian athletics as the country’s premier shot putter attempts to rebuild momentum.

A Promising Series of Throws

At the Open Throws meet, Toor showcased consistency throughout the competition. His series included three throws beyond the 20-metre mark, an encouraging indicator for a thrower aiming to regain his peak levels. His sequence read: 20.02m, 20.51m, foul, foul, foul, 20.07m.

The second attempt of 20.51m ultimately proved to be the winning mark, securing him the gold medal comfortably ahead of the rest of the field.

For Toor, the ability to cross the 20-metre barrier multiple times in a single competition is a positive sign. Over the past couple of seasons, the national record holder had struggled to produce consistent performances due to injuries and technical adjustments.

This competition, however, showed glimpses of the rhythm that once made him one of Asia’s dominant shot putters.

Toor’s best remains the Indian national record of 21.77m, achieved in Bhubaneswar in 2023. That mark cemented his status as India’s greatest shot putter and one of Asia’s leading athletes in the discipline.

However, the period following that record-setting throw proved challenging.

Recurring injury setbacks limited his appearances and prevented him from sustaining the level of performance required to regularly compete at the international level. As a result, throws beyond 20 metres a benchmark expected from elite shot putters became increasingly rare for the Punjab athlete. The latest performance therefore represents his longest throw in nearly two and a half years, a milestone that could mark the beginning of a resurgence.

The Open Throws Competition performance builds on a promising start to the 2026 season for Toor. Earlier this year, the Indian shot putter secured a silver medal at the Asian Indoor Championships, producing a throw of 20.05m. That result had already hinted that Toor was moving in the right direction physically and technically.

With the 20.51m effort now added to his season, Toor has demonstrated that he is capable of consistently crossing the 20-metre mark again. The next goal, however, remains clear: breaching the 21-metre barrier, which would place him back among Asia’s elite contenders.

While Toor dominated the competition, several other Indian throwers also featured in the event. Karanveer Singh finished second with a best effort of 19.36m, producing a solid series that included throws of 18.31m, 19.02m, and 19.15m before finishing with his best mark. Sanyam secured the third position with a throw of 18.28m, while Aryan Tyagi finished fourth with 17.96m.

Other notable performances included Atul with 17.57m and Anurag Singh Kaler with 17.54m, reflecting a competitive field of Indian throwers attempting to push the standards in the event. However, the spotlight remained firmly on Toor, whose return to 20-metre throws remains central to India’s prospects in the discipline.

Samardeep Gill Faces Difficult Start to Season

While Toor enjoyed a successful outing, it was a contrasting story for Samardeep Gill.

Gill, who had impressed observers with several strong performances last year, endured a difficult competition and finished 11th with a throw of 16.88m. The result continues a challenging start to the 2026 season for the young thrower, who will now look to regain form in upcoming competitions.

For India, Gill remains a promising talent, but his immediate focus will be on stabilising his performances and returning to the level he demonstrated previously.

Eyes on Asian Games Preparation

For Tajinderpal Singh Toor, the bigger objective lies ahead. With major international competitions approaching, particularly the Asian Games, the experienced thrower will aim to gradually increase his distances through the season. Crossing 21 metres consistently would significantly strengthen his chances of contending for medals at the continental level.

The Open Throws Competition result suggests that he is moving in the right direction. More importantly, the consistency displayed across multiple attempts indicates growing confidence and rhythm.

India’s strength in the throwing events has grown steadily in recent years, with athletes across shot put, javelin and discus pushing international standards.

Toor remains a central figure in that progress.

His return to competitive distances above 20 metres not only boosts his personal prospects but also strengthens India’s depth in the event heading into a crucial Olympic cycle leading toward Los Angeles 2028. If the Punjab thrower can continue building on this momentum and gradually push towards the 21-metre mark, he could once again become a serious medal contender on the Asian stage.

For now, the 20.51m throw stands as a significant step forward a reminder that India’s national record holder still has plenty left to offer on the field.
