Continuity, clarity and confidence form the backbone of Soorma Hockey Club’s vision heading into the upcoming editions of the Hockey India League, and the franchise has underlined that intent by retaining its established on-field leadership.
On December 23, Soorma Hockey Club (SHC) confirmed that Harmanpreet Singh will continue to lead the men’s team, while senior goalkeeper Savita Punia and dynamic midfielder Salima Tete will once again serve as co-captains of the women’s side.
The decision reflects SHC’s belief in stability as a competitive advantage, particularly in a league where short seasons demand instant cohesion and clear leadership. For the men’s team, Harmanpreet Singh’s role is almost self-explanatory. One of the most influential defenders in world hockey, his command at the back and lethal drag-flicking ability have consistently provided both control and cutting edge.
Under Harmanpreet’s leadership, Soorma finished third in the men’s Hockey India League last season, a campaign that showcased their growing maturity as a unit. Beyond club duties, Harmanpreet’s stature as captain of the Indian national team lends invaluable experience to the dressing room. Having led India to medals at the Olympic Games and Asian Games, his ability to remain composed under pressure has become a defining trait, setting standards for teammates both young and experienced.

Reflecting on the trust placed in him, Harmanpreet expressed optimism about the season ahead. “It’s always a special feeling to lead this team. Last season’s third-place finish showed what we’re capable of, and we’ve taken a lot of confidence from that. The team has grown closer and stronger, and I genuinely believe we have the right mix to challenge the best,” he said. “We’re fully focused, motivated, and ready to give everything when we step onto the field this season.”

On the women’s side, Soorma’s leadership model continues to be built on balance. Savita Punia and Salima Tete bring contrasting yet complementary strengths that have helped the team evolve into one of the league’s most consistent outfits. Last season’s runners-up finish was a testament to that synergy, as the team pushed hard in a tightly contested competition.
Savita, one of India’s most reliable goalkeepers, brings calm authority and sharp game reading from the back. Her presence offers reassurance in high-pressure moments, while her communication has been central to Soorma’s defensive organisation. Salima, on the other hand, represents the modern, high-tempo midfielder—agile, creative and relentless in her work rate. Together, they embody both experience and energy.
“Salima and I bring different strengths to the table, but we’re united by the same purpose—to lead this team with clarity, trust and belief,” Savita said while sharing her thoughts on the co-captaincy. “Our focus is on building a strong, positive culture where every player feels confident and empowered. When a team plays for each other and believes in the collective, results follow.”
For Salima, continuing as co-captain alongside Savita is both an honour and a learning opportunity. “Sharing the captaincy with someone like Savita is truly special for me. Her experience and the standards she sets push all of us to be better every day,” she said. “We’ve learned a lot from last season, and we know what it takes to go all the way now. The competition will be fierce, but we are training hard and determined to take that final step this season.”

Soorma Hockey Club’s women’s campaign will begin on December 29 against Shrachi Rarh Bengal Tigers at the Marang Gomke Jaipal Singh Munda Astro Turf Stadium in Ranchi, which will host the entire women’s tournament. The men’s team, meanwhile, faces a challenging opener against defending champions Shrachi Rarh Bengal Tigers on January 4 at the Mayor Radhakrishnan Hockey Stadium in Chennai. The men’s league will be staged across Chennai, Ranchi and Bhubaneswar, adding travel and adaptability to the competitive equation.
Guided by head coaches Philippe Goldberg and Jude Menezes, Soorma HC enters the season with a clear blueprint. Strong leadership on the field, tactical direction from the bench, and a squad shaped by both experience and hunger position the club as a serious contender in both competitions.
Owned by JSW Sports, Soorma Hockey Club represents the heartlands of Punjab and Haryana regions synonymous with Indian hockey’s grit and tradition. By retaining its leadership core, the franchise is signalling its commitment to long-term culture over short-term fixes. As the new HIL season unfolds, Soorma’s faith in Harmanpreet, Savita and Salima could well prove to be the foundation for a title-challenging campaign.
