Shillong Lajong FC delivered a composed and efficient away performance to defeat Gokulam Kerala FC 2-0 in the Star Cement Indian Football League (IFL) 2025–26 at the Payyanad Stadium on Wednesday.
Goals from Everbrightson Sana Mylliempdah and Tremiki Lamurong in either half ensured all three points for the visitors, propelling them into the top three of the standings.
With the victory, Shillong Lajong moved to 10 points from five matches, level with league leaders Sreenidi Deccan FC and second-placed Diamond Harbour FC on both points and goal difference. Gokulam Kerala, meanwhile, slipped to eighth with five points, continuing a run of inconsistent performances this season.
Bright Start but Limited Cutting Edge
The match began with both sides showing attacking intent, but the early exchanges were marked by a lack of precision in the final third. Shillong Lajong looked sharper in transition, while Gokulam attempted to build patiently through midfield.
The hosts were dealt an early setback in the 15th minute when Kingslee Fernandes was forced off due to injury, with Ashis Pradhan coming on as his replacement. The disruption appeared to affect Gokulam’s rhythm, allowing Shillong to grow into the contest.
Shillong’s first real chance came through a well-timed through ball from Phrangki Buam, which found Everbrightson Sana in space. However, the forward failed to keep his effort on target. Buam himself then tested goalkeeper Shibinraj Kunniyil from distance, signaling Shillong’s increasing control in attacking areas.

The breakthrough arrived in the 36th minute following a fluid attacking sequence down the right flank. A series of quick passes involving Samuel Muansang, Buam, and Tremiki Lamurong unsettled the Gokulam defence. The ball eventually deflected into the path of Everbrightson Sana, who reacted quickest to slot home from close range.
The goal reflected Shillong’s proactive approach—quick ball movement, intelligent positioning, and the ability to capitalise on second-ball situations inside the box.
Gokulam attempted to respond before the interval, with captain Mirjalol Kasimov coming closest. His header, however, lacked power and direction, allowing Shillong goalkeeper Siwel Rymbai to make a comfortable save. Shillong entered the break with a deserved 1-0 lead.
Gokulam Dominate Possession but Lack Penetration
The second half saw a shift in dynamics, with Gokulam Kerala enjoying greater possession as they searched for an equaliser. However, their build-up play lacked the incisiveness required to break down Shillong’s well-organised defensive structure.
Shillong, under head coach Bineria Thapa, displayed excellent defensive discipline, maintaining compact lines and limiting space between midfield and defence. Their ability to absorb pressure and transition quickly remained a key feature of their performance.
Despite controlling the ball, Gokulam struggled to create clear scoring opportunities. Their attacks were often forced wide, resulting in crosses that were comfortably dealt with by Shillong’s backline. While Gokulam pushed forward, Shillong continued to pose a threat on the counter. Around the hour mark, Tremiki Lamurong made a surging run down the right wing but could only find the side netting with his attempt.
However, the winger would not be denied for long. In the 65th minute, Shillong doubled their lead through a well-constructed attacking move. Lamlallian and Damaitphang Lyngdoh combined effectively on the right flank, creating space for Lamurong to make a perfectly timed run into the box.
Receiving the ball in stride, Lamurong showed composure to finish clinically past the goalkeeper, effectively putting the game beyond Gokulam’s reach. His performance earned him the Player of the Match award, highlighting his influence on both flanks and in decisive moments.

Following the second goal, Shillong Lajong shifted into a more controlled phase, prioritising defensive stability while managing the tempo of the game. Gokulam continued to push forward, but their efforts lacked cohesion and cutting edge in the final third.
Shillong’s defensive unit, led by a disciplined backline and supported by midfield tracking, ensured that goalkeeper Siwel Rymbai remained largely untroubled in the closing stages. Their organisation and communication were key in neutralising Gokulam’s attacking attempts.
Shillong Lajong’s performance stood out for its balance between attacking intent and defensive discipline. Their ability to convert key chances, combined with structured defending, made the difference against a side that dominated possession but failed to translate it into goals.
For Gokulam Kerala, the result underscores ongoing concerns in the final third. While their control of possession was evident, the lack of creativity and clinical finishing continues to hinder their progress in the league. The win significantly boosts Shillong Lajong’s campaign, placing them firmly among the title contenders early in the season. With momentum on their side and a well-defined tactical approach, they will look to build consistency in the coming fixtures.
Gokulam Kerala, on the other hand, will need to reassess their attacking strategies and find solutions quickly if they are to climb the table.
In the end, Shillong Lajong’s efficiency in key moments and disciplined execution across phases ensured a deserved 2-0 victory, marking one of their most complete performances of the season so far.
