Beneath the serene skies and turquoise waters of the Maldives, the Indian U20 men’s team has arrived with a clear objective development through competition.

While the surroundings offer calm, the focus within the Indian camp is firmly on preparation, performance, and progression as the Blue Colts gear up for the SAFF U20 Championship.

Leading the side is Mahesh Gawali, a former India international and current assistant coach of the senior men’s national team. Tasked with bridging the gap between youth and senior football, Gawali sees this tournament not just as a competition, but as a critical phase in India’s long-term football roadmap.

India begin their Group B campaign against Pakistan on March 26, followed by a clash with Bangladesh on March 28. With only the top two teams progressing to the semi-finals, the margin for error remains minimal. However, for Gawali, the results, while important, are secondary to the broader objective preparing players for the next level.

Building a pathway to the senior team

Gawali’s dual role within the national setup places him in a unique position to shape India’s footballing pathway. His involvement with both the senior and U20 teams allows for a seamless transition in terms of philosophy, expectations, and tactical understanding.

“It is a very important responsibility,” Gawali said. “The idea is to ensure continuity between the youth teams and the senior national team. We want players at this level to understand what is expected of them early.”

This continuity is a critical component of India’s evolving football structure. By exposing players to a consistent system across age groups, the transition to senior football becomes less abrupt and more organic.

A focus on intelligence and decision-making

At the heart of Gawali’s approach is a clear emphasis on football intelligence. Rather than overcomplicating tactics, the coaching staff is focusing on core principles quick decision-making, positional awareness, and discipline.

“We want players to be intelligent and sharp,” Gawali explained. “If they can read the game well and think quickly, they will naturally be more comfortable on the ball.”

This approach reflects a shift in Indian football’s developmental philosophy. Instead of relying purely on physicality or isolated technical skills, there is a growing emphasis on cognitive aspects of the game how players interpret situations, adapt to tempo changes, and execute under pressure.

SAFF as a testing ground

While the SAFF U20 Championship may not feature Asia’s top-tier teams, it provides a valuable competitive platform. For a young Indian squad, it offers the opportunity to experience match pressure, tactical challenges, and the demands of tournament football.

“This tournament allows us to observe players closely in real match situations,” Gawali noted. “Training is important, but matches show how players react under pressure.”

For a generation on the cusp of stepping into U23 and senior roles, these moments are crucial. The ability to handle pressure, maintain composure, and make correct decisions in key situations often determines progression at higher levels.

Evaluating temperament and consistency

One of the key aspects Gawali is keen to assess is temperament. Talent, he acknowledges, is present within the squad. The challenge lies in consistency and mental strength. “We know there is quality in this group,” he said. “Now it is about seeing how they perform under pressure and how consistent they can be.”

The coaching staff is encouraging players to take responsibility on the field communicate effectively, make decisions confidently, and contribute collectively. These are attributes essential not just for success at the U20 level, but for long-term careers in professional football.

India head coach Khalid Jamil has repeatedly emphasised building for the future, and the U20 setup plays a central role in that vision. With several players from this squad expected to graduate to higher levels, the focus is on holistic development. “Our aim is to prepare them for the next step,” Gawali said. “That includes improving their game awareness, decision-making, and ability to adapt to different situations.”

Exposure to international tournaments, even at the regional level, helps accelerate this process. It introduces players to varied playing styles, tactical setups, and competitive intensity factors that cannot be fully replicated in domestic environments.

Despite the emphasis on development, there is a strong sense of belief within the camp. The players have arrived in Malé with positive energy, aware of both the opportunity and responsibility that lies ahead.

“The message to the players is simple,” Gawali shared. “Stay confident, trust yourself, and play as a team.”

He also stressed the importance of learning through the tournament. Each match, regardless of the result, is viewed as a step forward in the players’ journey.

A defining phase for the Blue Colts

As India prepare to kick off their SAFF U20 Championship campaign, the tournament represents more than just a regional title chase. It is a defining phase in the development of a promising group of young footballers. For Mahesh Gawali, the objective is clear identify, nurture, and prepare players who can contribute at higher levels. The Maldives may provide a picturesque setting, but for the Blue Colts, it is a testing ground where potential must translate into performance.

And in that process, Indian football’s next generation begins to take shape.
