The Hockey India 8th Annual Awards not only celebrated the country’s elite performers but also shone a spotlight on the systems that are shaping the future of Indian hockey.

Among the standout honourees of the evening was the Roundglass Hockey Academy (RGHA), which received the prestigious Hockey India President Award for Outstanding Achievement 2025, recognising its transformative impact on grassroots development in Punjab.

Adding further significance to the occasion, RGHA goalkeeper Princedeep Singh was awarded the Hockey India Jugraj Singh Award for Upcoming Player of the Year 2025 (Men – Under 21), marking a landmark moment for both the academy and the player.

The dual recognition underscores a broader narrative the emergence of structured, high-performance ecosystems in Indian hockey that are capable of consistently producing elite-level talent.

A Model for Grassroots Transformation

The President Award for Outstanding Achievement is one of Hockey India’s most respected honours, and RGHA’s selection reflects years of sustained investment in grassroots development. Based in Punjab, a region synonymous with India’s hockey legacy, the academy has focused on rebuilding pathways from the grassroots to the elite level.

The award was presented by Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports Dr Mansukh Mandaviya and received by a distinguished delegation that included Sarpal Singh, Founding Director of Roundglass Sports; Rajinder Singh, Technical Lead and Dronacharya Awardee; Ashfaque Ullah Khan, Senior Lead of Hockey Operations; and Olympic medallist Harbinder Singh.

Speaking on the occasion, Sarpal Singh highlighted the long-term vision behind the initiative. “This recognition validates our mission to revive the golden era of Punjab hockey. We have focused on building world-class infrastructure and providing holistic development opportunities at the grassroots level. Seeing our athletes succeed and the academy being recognised at the national level is deeply satisfying,” he said.

RGHA’s approach goes beyond conventional training models. The academy has invested in a network of grassroots centres across Punjab, identifying talent at an early stage and providing access to structured coaching, modern facilities, and athlete welfare programmes. This integrated system ensures continuity in player development a critical factor in bridging the gap between junior and senior hockey.

Princedeep Singh: A Product of the System

If RGHA’s award reflects institutional success, Princedeep Singh’s recognition represents the tangible outcome of that system. The young goalkeeper, who joined the academy in 2022, has rapidly progressed through the ranks to establish himself as one of India’s most promising talents.

Winning the Jugraj Singh Award for Upcoming Player of the Year (Men – U21) places Princedeep among an elite group of young players who are expected to shape the future of Indian hockey. His performances over the past year, particularly at the junior international level, have been marked by composure, reflexes, and an ability to perform under pressure.

Princedeep was part of India’s campaign at the FIH Men’s Junior World Cup 2025, where the team secured a bronze medal. His contributions in crucial moments, especially in high-pressure knockout situations, have drawn attention from national selectors. His inclusion in the senior national camp further indicates his upward trajectory.

For a goalkeeper, progression at the international level demands not only technical skill but also mental resilience and tactical awareness. Princedeep’s development reflects a well-rounded training environment, where emphasis is placed equally on physical conditioning, psychological preparation, and game intelligence.

The recognition of RGHA also highlights a broader shift in Indian hockey the increasing role of private academies and structured development programmes in complementing the national framework.

Historically, Indian hockey has relied heavily on institutional teams and government-backed programmes. While these remain crucial, academies like RGHA are redefining the development landscape by introducing professional management, sports science integration, and long-term athlete monitoring systems.

This model aligns with global best practices, where talent identification and development are decentralised yet systematically connected to national pathways. By creating a pipeline that nurtures players from grassroots to elite levels, RGHA is contributing to the sustainability of Indian hockey’s talent pool.

While awards and accolades provide recognition, the true impact of initiatives like RGHA lies in their ability to inspire participation and create opportunities. By investing in infrastructure and outreach programmes, the academy is not only producing elite players but also expanding the base of the sport.

Punjab, once a dominant force in Indian hockey, has witnessed a revival in recent years, and RGHA has played a key role in that resurgence. The presence of structured training environments, access to quality coaching, and exposure to competitive platforms are gradually restoring the region’s prominence in the sport.

The success of Roundglass Hockey Academy and the rise of players like Princedeep Singh offer a blueprint for the future of Indian hockey. As the sport continues to evolve, the emphasis on grassroots development, high-performance training, and holistic athlete support will be central to sustaining international competitiveness.

For Princedeep, the journey is just beginning. For RGHA, the recognition serves as both validation and motivation to continue its mission. Together, they represent a system that is not only producing results today but also building the foundation for tomorrow’s success in Indian hockey.
