As the second season of the Women’s Hero Hockey India League (HIL) approaches, Ranchi Royals find themselves in a familiar yet promising position building on continuity, strengthening key areas, and preparing to harness the energy of a passionate home crowd.

With the tournament set to begin on December 28, the Royals will open their campaign at home against SG Pipers, hoping their blend of experience, youth, and local pride can drive another strong season.

Having retained key Indian players such as Neha Goyal, Ishika Chaudhary, and Rutaja Dadaso Pisal, Ranchi Royals have ensured stability in the core of their squad. The mini-auction held in September further bolstered their lineup, with smart additions aimed at adding depth across all departments. One of the most notable aspects of the squad composition is the presence of two Indian goalkeepers. National team custodian Bichu Devi Kharibam is expected to anchor the defence, while Madhuri Kindo provides reliable support from the bench, replicating her role from last season.

Defensively, the Royals appear well-stocked with a strong mix of international pedigree and Indian experience. Veteran defender Nikki Pradhan, who boasts 197 senior caps for India, and Ishika Chaudhary, with 76 caps, will form the backbone of the backline. Their understanding of international hockey and ability to marshal the defence will be crucial, especially in high-pressure situations. Complementing them are Argentine defenders Lucina von der Heyde and Maria Sofia Darnay Elias, whose technical quality and composure add an extra layer of assurance.

The addition of Netherlands defender Sabine Plönissen further strengthens the defensive unit, bringing European structure and discipline into the setup. Young Indian defender Lalthantluangi, fresh from an impressive outing at the FIH Hockey Women’s Junior World Cup, adds youthful energy and promise, offering the Royals flexibility and depth at the back.

In midfield, Ranchi Royals are anchored by the dependable Neha Goyal, a mainstay in the Indian women’s team. Her leadership and consistency will be vital in dictating the tempo of matches. Partnering her is Argentina’s Agostina Alonso, a two-time Olympic medallist who brings immense experience, having won silver at Tokyo 2022 and bronze at Paris 2024. Alonso’s work rate, game intelligence, and ability to control transitions are expected to be central to the Royals’ plans.

The midfield group is further strengthened by Maria Paula Ortiz, another experienced Argentine, while Indian youngsters Nandni and Albela Rani Toppo will look to make the most of their opportunities. Toppo, in particular, represents the next generation of Indian midfielders eager to make an impact at the elite level.

Up front, Ranchi Royals possess both proven firepower and exciting young talent. Rutaja Dadaso Pisal will be keen to continue her strong form after scoring a decisive brace in last season’s final. Leading the attack is Argentina’s Agustina Albertario, a dynamic forward and two-time Olympic medallist, whose pace and finishing ability can trouble any defence. She will be supported by New Zealand’s Hannah Cotter and India’s Deepika Soreng, forming a diverse and potent frontline.

A major emotional and strategic boost for the Royals comes from the presence of local Jharkhand stars Beauty Dung Dung and Sangita Kumari. Representing their home franchise, the duo will be eager to inspire the home crowd with committed performances. Alongside them is Sakshi Rana, who impressed at the Junior World Cup with three goals for India and will be keen to prove her scoring credentials against seasoned international defenders.

One of Ranchi Royals’ biggest strengths lies in their connection with the local fanbase. With several Jharkhand players in the squad, the team is well-placed to draw energy from a passionate home crowd, which could prove decisive in tight encounters. The squad’s balance combining international experience with youthful exuberance offers depth and versatility across positions.

However, there are challenges to address. The Royals may still rely heavily on their experienced and international players for consistent goal contributions, particularly from midfield. For the younger forwards, adapting quickly to the league’s intensity and physical demands will be critical if the team is to maintain momentum throughout the season.

With a revitalised squad, strong home support, and a clear sense of purpose, Ranchi Royals enter the Women’s Hero HIL season with optimism. As they prepare to begin their campaign on home turf, the Royals will hope that their blend of experience, local pride, and emerging talent can propel them toward another memorable run in the league.

All matches of the Hero Hockey India League will be broadcast live on Sony Sports Ten 1, Sony Sports Ten 3, and DD Sports, with live streaming available on Waves and the Hockey India League YouTube channel.
