The 87th UTT Senior National Table Tennis Championships witnessed a lively start to its singles events at the Abhay Prashal Stadium, as the qualification rounds delivered a compelling mix of dominant performances and edge-of-the-seat encounters.

With the top 16-ranked players in both men’s and women’s categories already assured direct entry into the main draw, the early spotlight firmly rested on those battling through the group stages for a coveted place in the knockout rounds.

The opening two rounds of group-stage matches highlighted the depth of India’s table tennis circuit. While several players progressed with straight-game victories, it was the tightly contested matches that underlined the intensity of the qualification phase, where margins are often razor-thin and a single point can decide the outcome.

In the men’s singles, one of the standout clashes came in Group 5, where Jami Imlinguba edged past Umar Khan in a thrilling five-game encounter. The match ebbed and flowed throughout, with both players trading games before Imlinguba held his nerve in the decider to seal a 3-2 win (11-8, 9-11, 11-6, 8-11, 11-9). The contest encapsulated the pressure of qualification matches, where consistency and composure become decisive factors.

Another impressive performance came from Rahane Archit in Group 33. After dropping the opening game, Archit showcased his ability to adapt and regain control, winning three consecutive games to clinch a 3-1 victory (8-11, 11-7, 11-6, 11-9). His turnaround reflected a strong tactical shift mid-match, a quality that will be crucial in the later stages of the tournament.

Abheek Kashyap, competing in Group 29, demonstrated similar control under pressure, registering a 3-1 win (11-9, 11-7, 8-11, 11-8). His ability to manage key points in close games proved decisive. Meanwhile, Rahul Malik in Group 40 secured a straight-game victory, though the scoreline did not fully reflect the competitiveness of the contest, with each game closely fought.

One of the most dramatic matches of the day unfolded in Group 84, where Arnav Aggarwal came through a tense five-game battle to win 3-2 (11-7, 9-11, 11-6, 8-11, 11-9). Matches like these highlighted the unpredictable nature of the qualification rounds, where even slight lapses can shift momentum rapidly. Similarly, in Group 106, Thakur Shreyansh displayed resilience, winning a closely contested 3-2 encounter after alternating results across the first four games.

The women’s singles section mirrored the competitiveness seen in the men’s draw, with several matches going the distance. In Group 2, Vani Sharma delivered a composed performance under pressure, edging out her opponent 3-2 (11-9, 8-11, 11-7, 9-11, 11-8) in one of the closest matches of the round. Her ability to stay composed in the deciding game proved crucial.

In Group 48, Ananya Kumari staged an impressive comeback after losing the first game, eventually winning 3-1 (7-11, 11-6, 11-8, 11-5). Her adaptability and improved control as the match progressed stood out. Another gripping contest came in Group 69, where Pranitha Garlapati held her nerve to defeat Shreya Limaye 3-2 (11-8, 6-11, 11-9, 9-11, 11-7), maintaining composure in a fluctuating encounter.

Group 78 produced yet another nail-biting finish, with Krishvi Arora clinching a 3-2 victory (11-9, 7-11, 11-6, 9-11, 11-8). Meanwhile, in Group 63, the contest between Chayasree Kakoti and Trisha Paul saw extended rallies and closely fought games before the eventual winner sealed the match in four hard-fought sets.

While the qualification rounds have already delivered high-quality action, the anticipation is set to rise further with the entry of top seeds into the main draw. Defending champion Diya Chitale, among others, will begin her campaign in the upcoming rounds, adding another layer of competitiveness to the tournament.

The early stages in Indore have once again reinforced the growing depth and competitiveness of Indian table tennis. With qualifiers gaining momentum and confidence, the transition into the knockout phase promises intriguing matchups against established names.

If the opening rounds are any indication, the battle for the singles titles at the 87th UTT Senior National Championships is shaping up to be intense, unpredictable, and reflective of the evolving standards of the sport in the country.
