Qatar registered a commanding 99-73 victory over India in Group D of the FIBA World Cup 2027 Asian Qualifiers 1st Round at the Lusail Multipurpose Hall in Doha on February 27, 2026.
Powered by Brandon Goodwin’s 23-point performance, the hosts overturned an early deficit and controlled proceedings for the majority of the contest. For India, the defeat marked their third loss in as many Group D matches, leaving them at the bottom of the standings with three points.

India began with intent. Princepal Singh opened the scoring from the free-throw line, and the visitors briefly led 7-3 in the opening minutes. Their biggest advantage of the night came at 7-3 with 8:23 remaining in the first quarter.
However, the momentum shifted decisively at the 7:31 mark when Brandon Goodwin tied the game at 7-7 from the line. What followed was a defining stretch. Goodwin and Ousmanediatta Dieng combined for 12 points during a 16-6 run that pushed Qatar ahead 19-11 with just over four minutes left in the first period.
India struggled with ball security during this phase, and Qatar capitalised efficiently in transition. By the end of the first quarter, the hosts had built a 28-17 lead, setting the tone for what followed.
India’s Second-Quarter Response
Despite trailing, India responded strongly in the second quarter. Kanwar Sandhu opened the period with a three-pointer, and the visitors began to find better rhythm offensively. They outscored Qatar 26-17 in the quarter, narrowing the deficit significantly.
An 8-0 burst late in the second period led by Pratyanshu Tomar and Princepal Singh reduced the gap from 42-32 to 42-40. By halftime, India had brought the contest to 45-43, trailing by just two points.
At that stage, the game remained open. India had managed to disrupt Qatar’s offensive flow and showed improved shot selection and defensive effort.

The turning point of the game arrived in the third quarter. Qatar seized complete control, outscoring India 30-9 in a dominant stretch that effectively ended the contest as a competitive affair.
A key sequence came between 3:32 in the third quarter and 9:16 in the fourth, when Qatar produced a 14-0 run to extend their lead from 63-52 to 77-52. Goodwin contributed six points during this surge, shooting with precision and controlling the tempo. India’s offensive production stalled during this period. Missed opportunities and turnovers allowed Qatar to extend possessions and generate open perimeter looks.
By the end of the third quarter, the gap had widened significantly, and the hosts were firmly in command.

Brandon Goodwin was central to Qatar’s victory. The point guard finished with 23 points on 8-of-12 shooting, including 5-of-7 from beyond the arc. He added five rebounds, three assists and two steals in under 20 minutes of action, recording a +16 plus/minus and an efficiency rating of 23.
Goodwin’s early nine-point burst in less than three minutes during the first quarter set the offensive tone.
Tyler Harris added 15 points and seven rebounds without committing a turnover, while Abdulla Mousa provided scoring off the bench, finishing with 14 points in under 11 minutes. Mousa converted every field-goal attempt and delivered an eight-point run in the final quarter. Collectively, Qatar maintained offensive efficiency and depth, with contributions across the rotation.
Kanwar Sandhu led India with 15 points, along with three assists and three steals. He also produced an eight-point stretch late in the game as India attempted to regain some momentum in the fourth quarter. India scored 21 points in the final period, but Qatar still edged them by three points in that quarter. The hosts’ largest lead reached 89-59 with just over five minutes remaining, underlining the margin established during the third-quarter surge.
In terms of game control, Qatar led for 37 minutes and 7 seconds. India were ahead for only 1 minute and 57 seconds, with the score tied for 56 seconds.
With this result, India remain winless after three matches in Group D, having previously lost home and away fixtures against Saudi Arabia. They now prepare to face world No. 28 Lebanon in Zouk Mikael on Tuesday. India are one of 16 teams competing in the FIBA Asia and Oceania qualifiers, grouped alongside Lebanon, Saudi Arabia and Qatar. A total of 80 teams across four FIBA regions are contesting the qualification process over six windows.
For Qatar, the performance showcased offensive depth and defensive control, highlighted by Goodwin’s efficiency and a decisive third-quarter run.
For India, the narrow halftime deficit offered promise, but the third-quarter lapse proved costly in a 99-73 defeat that leaves them searching for their first win in the campaign.
