The RR Kabel Prime Volleyball League powered by Scapia delivered another night of electrifying action as the Mumbai Meteors produced a flawless performance to dismantle the Hyderabad Black Hawks in straight sets at the Gachibowli Indoor Stadium.
With precision serving, airtight blocking, and relentless attacking, Mumbai clinched a commanding 15–9, 15–13, 15–7 victory their first of the season leaving the home fans stunned.
Shubham Chaudhary was named Player of the Match for his all-round brilliance, which set the tone for Mumbai’s dominance.

Mumbai came out firing from the first whistle, setting a high tempo that Hyderabad struggled to match. Their serving game was sharp, their transitions seamless, and their blocking near-perfect.
Abhinav Salar led the way early with his trademark jump serves that repeatedly unsettled the Hyderabad backline. One of his booming super serves in the opening set completely broke the hosts’ rhythm, forcing errors and setting the platform for a one-sided start.
Hyderabad captain Paulo Lamounier, one of the league’s most tactically astute setters, tried to inject structure by alternating plays between Niyas Abdul Salam and Sahil Kumar, both capable of explosive finishes. But Mumbai’s preparation was evident they had clearly done their homework.

Every time Salam or Sahil rose for a spike, Mumbai’s defense anticipated it perfectly, employing disciplined two-man blocks that blunted Hyderabad’s primary attack. This tactical discipline frustrated the Black Hawks, who couldn’t find their usual fluency through the middle.
With their block-defense combination holding strong, Mumbai closed the first set 15–9 in just under 15 minutes, establishing total control of the match.
Hyderabad’s Gamble Fails, Mumbai Tighten Their Grip
The second set saw Hyderabad attempt a comeback, but it was Mumbai who continued to dictate play. Lamounier looked to stretch the defense by using back-row pipe attacks and quick sets, introducing John Joseph to add variety in the front court.
The home side also made a bold move, calling for a Super Point, hoping to shift momentum. But that gamble backfired. Shubham Chaudhary read the play perfectly, producing a decisive block that not only denied Hyderabad the point but doubled the advantage for Mumbai.
That moment visibly lifted the Meteors, who played with greater freedom thereafter. Chaudhary followed up his block with consecutive attacks down the left flank, each met with thunderous applause from the traveling Mumbai fans.
At 12–12, the set was still in the balance. That’s when Mathias Loftesnes, the Norwegian powerhouse, stepped up. Combining strength with precision, Loftesnes’ diagonal hits split Hyderabad’s defense wide open. A perfectly timed block from Akashdeep Singh and another service winner from Abhinav saw Mumbai clinch the set 15–13, moving within one of victory.
The third set turned into a showcase of Mumbai’s all-round superiority. Their confidence was soaring, while Hyderabad appeared deflated after missing opportunities to capitalize in the previous set.
Abhinav Salar once again took charge at the service line. His power and placement left the Black Hawks scrambling for control. In one scintillating service run, he delivered two Super Serves and two clean aces, swinging momentum entirely in Mumbai’s favor.
With Hyderabad’s defense in disarray, Shubham Chaudhary seized the opportunity to dominate at the net. His backcourt spikes and cross-court finishes were unstoppable, and his ability to turn half-chances into points kept the pressure constant.
Even when Hyderabad introduced Guru to bolster their attack and Anu George to stabilize the defense, Mumbai remained in total command. Their coverage, particularly in transition, was immaculate turning digs into immediate scoring opportunities.
Loftesnes’ consistency in attack and the quick hands of setter Vinit Khandekar ensured the Meteors maintained tempo and precision throughout. Every combination play looked rehearsed, every serve calculated, and every block executed with intent.
Mumbai’s momentum never wavered as they wrapped up the third set 15–7, completing a 3–0 clean sweep in just over an hour.
Clinical and Composed: A Perfect Team Effort
For head coach Rohit Kumar, the win was not just about the scoreline it was about execution.
“We came in with a clear plan and stuck to it,” said Rohit after the match. “Our serving and blocking were exceptional tonight. Hyderabad are a strong side at home, so to win 3–0 shows how well we maintained focus. Every player contributed from Shubham’s attack to Abhinav’s serves, it was total team volleyball.”
Indeed, Mumbai’s balance stood out. Their rotation was efficient, their energy unrelenting, and their decision-making crisp. Every player understood their role, and the communication between setter and hitters was seamless.
Shubham, the deserved Player of the Match, credited the team’s preparation.
“We had studied Hyderabad’s pattern closely,” he said. “The key was to stay aggressive and not give them free points. Abhinav’s serving runs gave us the edge, and once we got into rhythm, we didn’t look back.”
Hyderabad Left Searching for Answers
For the Hyderabad Black Hawks, the night brought frustration. Playing in front of their home crowd, the hosts struggled to sustain momentum. While Lamounier’s creativity and Salam’s aggression offered moments of hope, inconsistency in passing and service reception proved costly.
Coach David Costa acknowledged the lapses:
“We lost shape early and couldn’t recover. Mumbai served very well, and their block timing hurt us. It’s a short league, so we need to regroup quickly before the next game.”
Hyderabad will look to reset before facing the Bengaluru Torpedoes, while Mumbai, buoyed by their commanding performance, will aim to carry this confidence into their upcoming fixtures.
The victory marks a significant early statement from Mumbai Meteors a team that blends international power with Indian precision. Their dominance across all three sets, especially in serve and block, highlights their credentials as serious title contenders this season.
For the fans in Hyderabad, it may not have been the result they wanted, but it was a reminder of the rising quality of the Prime Volleyball League fast-paced, unpredictable, and full of world-class action.
As the lights dimmed at Gachibowli, Mumbai left the arena with smiles and momentum a perfect night where everything clicked, and every serve, spike, and block hit its mark.
