Punjab FC and NorthEast United FC settled for a point each after playing out a 1–1 draw in the Indian Super League 2025–26 at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in New Delhi on Monday.

Two quick-fire goals in the second half—first from Parthib Gogoi for NorthEast United and then from Nsungusi Jr. Effiong for Punjab FC ensured that neither side could gain a decisive advantage in an evenly contested encounter. The result sees Punjab FC move up to eighth place with four points, while NorthEast United FC remain 10th in the standings with three points after four matches.

The visitors began the match with greater intensity and created the early opportunities. NorthEast United looked particularly dangerous from wide areas, with their attacking play focused on stretching Punjab’s defensive line. Within the opening quarter of an hour, the Highlanders came close to opening the scoring when Lalrinzuala delivered a precise cross from the left flank, finding Spanish centre-back Míchel Zabaco inside the box. The defender, however, failed to convert the chance, sending his effort wide despite being unmarked.

Moments later, winger Jithin MS also found space in the attacking third and attempted an audacious chip over the goalkeeper, but his effort drifted just wide of the target.

Punjab initially struggled to impose themselves on the match but gradually found their rhythm as the half progressed.

Punjab Grow into the Game

After weathering the early pressure, Punjab began to assert control in midfield and started creating chances of their own. Spanish midfielder Daniel Ramírez came close to breaking the deadlock when he found himself unmarked inside the penalty area, but his header failed to find the target. Soon after, Nigerian striker Nsungusi Jr. Effiong tested the NorthEast goalkeeper with Punjab’s first shot on target.

Punjab’s momentum was briefly disrupted in the 30th minute when head coach Panagiotis Dilmperis was forced into a double substitution following an injury to Nikhil Prabhu. The change altered the rhythm of the contest slightly, with both teams struggling to maintain sustained attacking momentum.

NorthEast United, however, nearly capitalised late in the first half when Parthib Gogoi found himself in a promising position, but the deadlock remained intact as both teams headed into the break without scoring.

The second half began with a scrappy phase of play, with three players receiving bookings within the opening minutes as both sides fought aggressively for control. The breakthrough finally arrived in the 60th minute when Parthib Gogoi produced a moment of composure to put NorthEast United ahead.

The move began with Lalrinzuala attempting to break forward before being surrounded by three Punjab defenders. The ball broke loose in the process, and Gogoi reacted quickest. The forward controlled the ball expertly before driving forward and finishing calmly past goalkeeper Arshdeep Singh, giving the Highlanders a 1–0 lead.

Effiong Responds Immediately

Punjab’s response was swift and decisive. Just three minutes later, the hosts drew level through their in-form striker Nsungusi Jr. Effiong. Substitute Suhail Bhat, who had been lively since coming on, played a crucial role in the equaliser. After winning a duel with defender Redeem Talang on the left flank, Suhail surged into the penalty area before delivering a perfectly timed cutback.

Effiong reacted quickly inside the box, turning sharply before tapping the ball into the net to make it 1–1 in the 63rd minute. The goal marked Effiong’s third of the ISL season and his third in just two matches, highlighting his growing influence in Punjab’s attack.

Buoyed by the equaliser and supported by the home crowd, Punjab FC began to push forward with greater urgency as the match entered its final stages. The Shers appeared determined to secure all three points and created a series of attacking opportunities in the closing minutes.

Substitute Samir Zeljković even thought he had scored the winner when he slotted the ball into the net late in the match. However, the celebrations were cut short as the assistant referee raised the flag for offside.

NorthEast United, meanwhile, defended resolutely and attempted to threaten on the counterattack but struggled to create clear chances during the closing moments.

Despite Punjab’s late pressure, neither side could find a decisive goal and the match ended 1–1, with both teams forced to settle for a share of the points. For Punjab FC, the result extends their unbeaten run and moves them slightly higher in the standings, while NorthEast United will take encouragement from another resilient away performance despite their challenging run of fixtures.

Punjab head coach Panagiotis Dilmperis will likely be pleased with his team’s fighting spirit after conceding first, while NorthEast United manager Juan Pedro Benali may reflect on the missed opportunities in the opening half that could have changed the course of the match.

As the ISL season continues to gather momentum, both teams will now look to build on this result and push for greater consistency in the coming fixtures.
