The rechristened Indian Football League (IFL) 2025-26 season began with late drama in Sri Bhaini Sahib as Namdhari Sports Academy snatched a stoppage-time equaliser to hold former champions Aizawl FC to a 1-1 draw at the Namdhari Stadium on Friday evening.

In a contest defined by tactical discipline and late pressure, Vanlalhriatzuala’s first-half strike had appeared sufficient to hand Aizawl an opening-day victory. However, Senegalese striker Abdoulaye Diallo converted in the sixth minute of added time to rescue a point for the Punjab side in front of their home supporters.

The result marked the second draw in five meetings between the two teams, with Aizawl holding a slight edge historically.

Tactical Set-Up and Early Momentum

Aizawl head coach Lalruatfela approached the fixture with a structured midfield-heavy formation, deploying Zomuansanga as a lone striker. The design was clear: maintain numerical superiority in the centre and utilise the flanks for penetration.

Namdhari, under coach Harpreet Singh, lined up in a traditional 4-4-2 structure. Skipper Lamine Moro anchored the defence, while Francis Addo and Najeeb Ibrahim operated centrally in midfield. The hosts relied on direct build-up and physical presence up front.

Aizawl began with greater urgency. Within four minutes, they registered the first attempt on goal, signalling their intent. Right-back Laldawngzuala frequently advanced into attacking positions, delivering crosses that tested Namdhari goalkeeper Nishan Singh early.

The visitors controlled the tempo for large stretches of the first half. Vincent Lalduhawma created one of the best openings when he located Omoma unmarked inside the six-yard area. However, the resulting effort lacked power and was comfortably dealt with by Nishan.

Aizawl Take the Lead

The breakthrough arrived two minutes before the interval. What initially appeared to be a harmless delivery from Dawnga drifted across the box, catching Namdhari’s defence flat-footed. Vanlalhriatzuala capitalised on the space afforded to him, adjusting swiftly before striking a precise right-footed curler beyond Nishan and into the net. The goal was a reward for Aizawl’s territorial dominance and intelligent exploitation of wide spaces. They entered the break with a deserved 1-0 advantage.

Recognising the need for greater midfield control, Harpreet introduced Bhupinder Singh at half-time, replacing forward Jaskaranpreet Singh. The adjustment aimed to stabilise possession and limit Aizawl’s transitions. Despite the change, Aizawl created the first significant chance of the second half. Zozoa’s curling attempt forced Nishan into an acrobatic save, tipping the ball onto the crossbar to preserve the one-goal deficit.

As the match progressed, Namdhari began committing more numbers forward. Diallo was introduced in the 59th minute, adding physical presence and directness in the final third. The home side gradually shifted the momentum, pressing higher and contesting second balls more aggressively.

The increased intensity brought disciplinary consequences. Skipper Moro received a yellow card in the 81st minute, followed by Vanlalhriatzuala five minutes later. Even coach Harpreet was cautioned earlier, reflecting the competitive tension on the sidelines.

With the clock approaching full time and six minutes added on, Namdhari intensified their push. Diallo came agonisingly close when he found space inside the penalty area and attempted a lofted finish, only to see the effort sail over both the goalkeeper and the crossbar.

The hosts refused to relent. In the final moments, a snapshot from Lotjem struck the left upright and rebounded into play. Positioned centrally, Diallo reacted quickest to tap home from close range, sending the home crowd into celebration. The equaliser was a product of sustained pressure rather than isolated fortune. Namdhari’s persistence in the closing stages ultimately unsettled Aizawl’s defensive organisation.

For Aizawl, the result may feel like two points dropped. Their structured midfield and effective use of width produced control for significant portions of the match. However, game management in the final minutes proved costly.

Namdhari, meanwhile, demonstrated resilience and tactical flexibility. The shift to a more compact midfield structure in the second half and the introduction of Diallo altered the dynamic. Their ability to sustain pressure in added time reflects strong physical conditioning and mental resolve. The draw sets the tone for what promises to be a competitive IFL season. With promotion stakes high and the league operating under a new identity, early points carry significant weight.

The opening fixture of the 2025-26 Indian Football League delivered intensity, tactical intrigue and late drama. While neither side secured all three points, both showcased attributes that could shape their campaigns.

Aizawl displayed technical structure and attacking discipline. Namdhari exhibited persistence and late-game composure.

If the season opener is any indication, the rechristened IFL will offer closely contested encounters where margins are minimal and resilience is often decisive.
