The Indian Open Jumps competition in Bengaluru witnessed a series of impressive performances as several Indian athletes began their season on a positive note.
Among the standout performers was Mubassina Mohammed, who delivered a strong display in the women’s long jump to claim the gold medal with a new personal best, while Abdulla Aboobacker emerged victorious in the men’s triple jump ahead of national record holder Praveen Chithravel.
Mubassina Continues Upward Trajectory
Twenty-year-old Mubassina Mohammed continued her remarkable rise in Indian athletics by winning the women’s long jump gold medal with a best effort of 6.38m, improving her personal best by two centimetres in her season opener.
The jump marked another milestone in the young athlete’s career, underlining her growing consistency in the event. Last season, Mubassina had already demonstrated steady improvement, bettering her personal best three times across different competitions. The latest performance suggests that the long jumper is continuing to build momentum as she moves into the new season.
Mubassina trains at the Anju Bobby George High Performance Centre, a facility that has played a significant role in nurturing young jumping talent in India. Her recent results highlight the progress she has made under a structured training environment and the potential she possesses as one of the emerging long jumpers in the country.

The Bengaluru meet was not the first time Mubassina had delivered a standout performance in recent months. Earlier this year, she was crowned champion at the All India Inter-University Athletics Championships, representing SRM University and winning the women’s long jump gold medal with a jump of 6.15m.
Her rise in the event has been steady since she first breached the six-metre barrier in 2025, a key milestone for developing long jumpers. That season saw her produce multiple personal bests while competing across national-level competitions.

At the U23 National Championships, Mubassina secured the gold medal with a jump of 6.36m. Although that mark carried a non-wind-recorded (NWI) reading and could not be officially registered as a record performance, it further demonstrated her growing ability to consistently produce competitive distances.
Her performances have also brought success on the international stage, where she has won medals at both the South Asian Athletics Championships and the Federation Cup, establishing herself as one of the promising young jumpers in Indian athletics.
Among India’s Best U20 Jumpers
Mubassina has also been among the leading performers in the women’s U20 long jump category in India. During the 2025 season, she recorded one of the best jumps in the country, finishing among the top athletes in the national rankings.
The top five U20 long jump performances in India in 2025 included:
- Pavana Nagaraj – 6.32m (PB)
- Mubassina Mohammed – 6.30m (PB)
- Tamanna – 5.96m (PB)
- Sadhana Ravi – 5.94m (PB)
- Janice Teresa Regi – 5.81m (PB)
Notably, Pavana Nagaraj and Mubassina Mohammed were the only athletes in the category to cross the six-metre mark that season, highlighting their position among the most promising young jumpers in the country.
Aboobacker Wins Triple Jump Gold
The men’s triple jump event at the Indian Open Jumps also produced an exciting contest between some of India’s leading athletes. Abdulla Aboobacker began his season strongly, winning the gold medal with a jump of 16.83m. The performance demonstrated the Asian Games medalist’s readiness as he builds towards a competitive season.
National record holder Praveen Chithravel finished second with a best jump of 16.78m, while Gailey Venister secured the bronze medal with a lifetime best effort of 16.48m.
The performances in Bengaluru offered encouraging signs for Indian athletics, particularly in the jumping events where several athletes are showing steady progress. For Mubassina Mohammed, the season-opening personal best is another indication of her upward trajectory. With her consistent improvements and growing experience at national competitions, she is widely regarded as one of the young athletes to watch in the coming years.
As the athletics season gathers pace, performances like these highlight the depth of emerging talent in Indian track and field and offer optimism for future international competitions.
