Mohun Bagan Super Giant delivered a commanding performance in the Kolkata derby, defeating Mohammedan Sporting Club 5-1 at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan on Saturday night.
The emphatic victory lifted the Mariners provisionally to the top of the Indian Super League table with nine points, edging ahead of Jamshedpur FC on goal difference.
For Mohammedan SC, the defeat leaves them at the bottom of the standings without a point. Robson Azevedo, who scored twice in the first half, was named Player of the Match.
Early Shock, Swift Response
Head coach Sergio Lobera rotated his squad, introducing Amey Ranawade, Manvir Singh, Deepak Tangri and Jason Cummings into the starting XI. Mohammedan coach Mehrajuddin Wadoo made two midfield changes, bringing in Lalthankima and Lalngaihsaka as the visitors fielded an all-Indian lineup once again.
The derby began at high intensity, with Mohun Bagan asserting early pressure. A corner inside the opening minute set the tone, and Cummings saw an early attempt blocked. Robson tested goalkeeper Subhajit Bhattacharjee from distance in the second minute, while Alberto Rodríguez sent a long-range effort over the bar.
Despite the early dominance from the hosts, it was Mohammedan who struck first in the 12th minute. Lalngaihsaka delivered a precise corner from the right, and Lalthankima rose above the defence to power a header into the top-left corner, leaving Vishal Kaith with no chance and silencing the home crowd.

The setback did little to disrupt Mohun Bagan’s attacking rhythm. In the 18th minute, Robson Azevedo struck the crossbar with a curling effort, signalling the Mariners’ intent. The equaliser followed soon after.
In the 22nd minute, Robson received the ball on the left side of the box and curled a right-footed shot into the bottom-left corner to level the score at 1-1. Four minutes later, he doubled his tally. A loose ball inside the penalty area fell invitingly to the Brazilian, who timed his right-footed finish into the bottom-right corner to give Mohun Bagan a 2-1 lead.
The rapid turnaround shifted the momentum decisively in favour of the hosts.

Mohammedan struggled to regain defensive stability, and Mohun Bagan capitalised again before halftime. In the 35th minute, defensive hesitation allowed Jamie Maclaren to pounce inside the box. The striker slotted home from close range to make it 3-1 heading into the interval.
The three-goal burst within 13 minutes effectively tilted the derby in Mohun Bagan’s favour, reflecting their clinical finishing and ability to respond under pressure.
Second-Half Control
Mohammedan attempted to respond after the break, with Amarjit Singh and substitute Makan Chothe Winkle trying their luck from distance. However, Mohun Bagan maintained territorial control and defensive organisation.
Manvir Singh, introduced into the rotated lineup, came close early in the second half before finding the net in the 62nd minute. Abhishek Singh delivered a cross into the area, and Manvir’s diving header deflecting off defender Sajjad Hussain found its way into the net to stretch the lead to 4-1.
The goal underlined Mohun Bagan’s sustained pressure and their ability to exploit defensive uncertainty.
The final flourish came in the 70th minute. Dimitri Petratos unleashed a powerful strike from nearly 30 yards out. The ball clipped the woodwork before nestling into the net, extending the scoreline to 5-1 and effectively ending the contest.
Even with a four-goal cushion, the Mariners continued to push forward. Liston Colaco, Sahal Abdul Samad and Maclaren tested Subhajit Bhattacharjee, who produced a series of saves to prevent further damage.

The final whistle confirmed a comprehensive 5-1 victory for Mohun Bagan Super Giant — a result that not only secured derby bragging rights but also propelled them to the summit of the table.
The match showcased the depth within Lobera’s squad, as the rotated lineup delivered a dominant attacking display. Robson’s brace, Maclaren’s opportunistic finish, Manvir’s aerial contribution and Petratos’ long-range strike highlighted the variety in Mohun Bagan’s offensive arsenal.
For Mohammedan Sporting, the early lead offered promise, but defensive lapses and sustained pressure from the hosts proved costly. The result leaves them seeking their first points of the season as the campaign gathers pace.
On derby night in Kolkata, however, the story belonged to Mohun Bagan a five-goal performance that reinforced their title credentials and sent them to the top of the standings in emphatic fashion.
