The Indian Women’s Hockey Team booked their place in the final of the FIH Hockey World Cup Qualifiers 2026 in Hyderabad with a hard-fought 1–0 victory over Italy in the semi-final at the G. M. C. Balayogi Hockey Ground on Friday.
A decisive goal from Manisha Chauhan in the 40th minute proved enough to separate the two sides in what turned out to be a tightly contested encounter.
With the win, India will now face England in the final, scheduled for March 14 at 7:30 PM IST, as the hosts look to cap off their impressive campaign in front of a home crowd.
Cagey Opening Quarter
The match began with both teams approaching the contest cautiously, leading to a tense opening quarter dominated by midfield battles. India attempted to assert themselves early by making a couple of strong circle entries, looking to create early pressure on the Italian defence.
Italy, however, responded confidently and gradually found their rhythm. Their forwards pushed aggressively into the Indian half, forcing the hosts to stay compact defensively. Despite a few promising moves from both teams, neither side managed to produce a clear scoring opportunity in the opening quarter.

The momentum of the game began to shift in India’s favour during the second quarter. The hosts started using the width of the field more effectively, stretching the Italian defence and creating space along the flanks. India’s attacking intent resulted in their first penalty corner of the match in the 18th minute. Forward Navneet Kaur stepped up to take the shot, but Italian goalkeeper Lucia Ines Caruso produced a sharp save to deny the hosts.
India continued to build pressure, earning another penalty corner in the 27th minute. This time the team attempted a creative variation, playing the ball back to the injector Salima Tete, who unleashed a shot on goal. However, the Italian defence held firm as the final defender cleared the ball off the line, preventing what looked like a certain goal.
Just two minutes later, India earned yet another penalty corner. Navneet Kaur once again went for goal, but her attempt drifted wide, allowing Italy to survive the barrage of Indian attacks and keep the scores level heading into halftime.

Italy started the second half with renewed intent and nearly took the lead early in the third quarter. Emilia Munitis managed to break through the Indian defence and found herself one-on-one with the goalkeeper.
India’s Bichu Devi Kharibam, however, produced a crucial intervention. Charging off her line, she made a timely save to deny Italy what could have been the opening goal. Moments later, India regained control and earned another penalty corner in the 40th minute an opportunity that finally produced the breakthrough.
This time, Manisha Chauhan stepped up and delivered a powerful drag-flick straight down the middle. The strike pierced through the Italian defence and found the back of the net, sending the home crowd into celebration as India took a 1–0 lead. Holding a narrow advantage, India pushed forward in the final quarter looking to extend their lead and put the game beyond Italy’s reach.
The hosts earned two early penalty corners in the final period, but Italy’s defence remained resolute, blocking both attempts and keeping themselves within striking distance. As the match approached its final minutes, Italy threw everything forward in search of an equaliser. Their persistence paid off when they won a crucial penalty corner in the 59th minute, setting up a tense finish.
However, the Indian defence stood firm under pressure. With disciplined positioning and sharp reactions inside the circle, the hosts successfully defended the set-piece and preserved their slender lead.

When the final whistle sounded, India had secured a narrow but well-earned 1–0 victory, sealing their place in the final of the tournament. The match showcased India’s ability to remain composed under pressure and capitalise on key opportunities. While the hosts created several scoring chances through penalty corners, it was Manisha Chauhan’s clinical conversion that ultimately made the difference.
The defensive resilience shown in the closing minutes also highlighted the team’s discipline and collective determination.
Focus Shifts to England
With the semi-final hurdle cleared, India will now turn their attention to the final against England, one of the strongest teams in the competition. The hosts will carry momentum into the title clash after a series of strong performances throughout the tournament, including their earlier victories in the group stage and knockout rounds.
Playing in front of passionate home supporters in Hyderabad has provided the Indian team with an additional boost throughout the qualifiers, and they will hope to use that energy once again in the final. A victory against England would not only secure the FIH Hockey World Cup Qualifiers 2026 title but also cap off an impressive campaign for the Indian Women’s Hockey Team.
For now, the Blue Tigresses can take confidence from a disciplined performance that saw them overcome a determined Italian side and move one step closer to lifting the trophy on home soil.
