Asian Athletics Championships: India ends Day 1 with 2 medals

The Big Story of yesterday was definitely Gulveer Singh won India’s first gold medal 🥇 at the 2025 Asian Athletics Championships, topping the men’s 10,000m event.

4:14pm | Time for mixed 4×400 race and we see Rupal is back on the track. what a fabulous race by the India quartet. The Indian quartet of Santosh Kumar, Rupal, Vishal & Subha gave a brilliant performance to win the gold medal. Gold #2 in Gumi for India! They clocked 3:18.12 We defend the gold we won in 2023, then the timing was 3:14.70m.
🇱🇰Sri Lanka won the 🥉 Bronze medal in the Mix 400m Relay at the Asian Athletics Championships 2025 in Gumi, South Korea.
4:00pm | Praveen Chitravel has won Silver Medal at the Triple Jump with a 16.90m jump behind Zhu from China at 17.06m. Defending champion Abdulla who had won with a jump of 16.92m could only manage a 16.72m and was placed fourth.
3:54pm | Tejaswin Shankar finished third in the all important last event of the grueling decathlon. He finished third in the 1500m race with 4:37.99 but that was good enough to take him to the Silver Medal. Tejaswin Shankar wins Silver Medal with a total score of 7618
3:05pm | Its raining heavily and they have it seems stopped the 10,000m race midway. Same is the case with Triple Jump where Praveen was second with a 16.90m and Abdulla is fourth with a 16.72m. 2:40pm | Its a Bronze Medal for Yoonus. Asian Athletics championships 2025: Bronze medal for Yoonus Shah in 1500m.. One feels he could have paced it a tad bit better but nonetheless a medal that adds on to the Indian legacy in middle distance running in the Asian region. Yoonus Shah clocked 3:43.03 in men’s 1500m to win 🥉 at the Asian Athletics Championships.He led for most of the race but was edged out in the final 50m. 🥇 Japan’s Kazuto Iizawa took gold with a PB of 3:42.56 🥈 South Korea’s Jaeung Lee grabbed silver with 3:42.79
For 24-year-old Yoonus, this was his first major international medal — a brilliant breakthrough moment! 🔥

2:20pm | Its time for 400m Women race now as we have Rupal & Vithya eyeing for Medals. What a good run by Rupal as she was even leading for quite sometime but then Matsumoto with a late blitz and a personal best clinched the gold. India had a silver in 2023 thanks to Aishwarya on this event. Rupal has won Silver Medal.

2:14pm | Great run by Vishal TK as he tagged along the leaders uptil last, and he has clocked his personal best. Good run, the medal wait continues in 400m M as Vishal clocks a 45.57 to lose bronze by 0.02s. Fastest time by an Indian quartermiler in 2025 . Very well done. Finished 4th in the 400m final at the Asian Championships, he clocked a stunning Personal Best of 45.57s. Two back-to-back PBs in just two days. He had won gold 🥇 at the Federation Cup with a time of 46.19s. 7th fastest Indian ever over 400m!
Ammar Yahia Ibrahim 🇶🇦 storms to a comfortable win over 400m at the Asian Athletics Championships, taking home gold in 45.33s.
Kentaro Sato 🇯🇵 took silver in 45.50s, ahead of Kalinga Kumarage 🇱🇰 in 45.55s.
2:10pm | In the Triple Jump Praveen started with 16.60m and is currently second just above Abdulla Aboobacker who did 16.40m
2:00pm | TJ throws a 51.46m in his last Javelin attempt, this is better than Muruyama (50.90m) but lesser than Xiang (55.09m) the leader. 51.46m by Tejaswin Shankar and with this he will get 610 points his total will be 6925

1:15pm | The reigning champion Abdulla Aboobacker returns to defend his crown today! He will be in action at 13:50 PM ( IST) In the previous edition, Aboobacker soared to Gold 🥇 in the men’s triple jump with a leap of 16.92m. He opened his 2025 season in style at the Indian Open Jumps in Bengaluru, clinching gold with a stellar 17.19m — his second 17m+ mark in the last 2.5 years.
Currently ranked third in the Asian lead for 2025, Aboobacker will face a formidable challenge today from national record holder Praveen Chithravel and Tokyo Olympics silver medallist 🇨🇳 Zhu Yaming.

10:30am | Tejaswin Shankar has managed a 3.90m pole vault, which actually puts him on last place in this event of Decathlon. Possibly he will lose the first place for this result. It is going down to the wire in Decathlon as TJ with 3.90m (590 pts) in Pole Vault has 6315 after 8..
Fei Xiang got 4.80m (849) to amass 6318 pts..However, Xiang’s JT & 1500 aren’t strong! Maruyama (6300) is real threat! Behind by 3 points now
8:30am | As India will have three athletes in the 400m in the evening. Defending men’s and women’s 400m champions Kentaro Sato 🇯🇵 and Nadeesha Ramanayake 🇱🇰 will attempt to defend their tites tonight in Gumi 🇰🇷 at the 2025 Asian Athletics Championships
7:30am | A season best discuss throw from Tejaswin with 37.74m which places him on 5th in this event. It earns a respectable 619 pts in Discus Throw (7th event of Decathlon). His total tally moves to 5725 pts after completion of 7 events. Maruyama – 5627 pts & Xiang – 5469 pts.
7:25am | Asian Athletics championships 2025: Jyothi Yarraji clocks 13.18s in 100m H heat1 to finish third and qualifies for Final. Not the best of runs from the defending champion in 100mH, Jyothi Yarraji, in the qualification heat as she clocks 13.18s to place 3rd behind Yumi Tanaka (12.89s) & Wu Yanni (13.07s). Although she’s safely through to finals.
Jyothi Yarraji’s 2025 outdoor season has been far from perfect. She suffered an injury after a brilliant Indoor season & hasn’t been to compete at her best level. This showed in the heat today at Asian Athletics Championships. Best wishes to her for the final
7:15am | Both Shaili (6.17m) & Ancy (6.14m) have entered the final, although with pretty average jumps. Will need to do much better in final scheduled tomorrow.
6:55am | Shaili betters her mark to 6.17m in second attempt, while Ancy does a 6.14m in second attempt. In Ancy group Arani from Iran qualifies for Final with a 6.33m jump
6:46am | In Long Jump, Shaili did a 6.12m in her first attempt while Ancy managed a 6.07m. Both are in second place currently.
6:44am | A 14.58s in the 110m Hurdles in Decathlon for Tejaswin Shankar, which is his personal best as he finished behind Muruyama who clocked 14.53, overall he was third fastest. The Indian NR holder in Decathlon ( Indoor Heptathlon & HJ ) clocks a time of 14.58s in the 6th event, 110mH, to earn 901 pts.. Takes his total to 5106 pts. Maruyama – 4972. Leads by 34 points
6:35am | Indian Long Jumpers Ancy Sojan & Shaili Singh are in action now in the qualifying. Only once in the history of the Asian Championships have two Indian women long jumpers stood on the podium in the same edition. Shaili Singh with a 6.54m jump had won Silver in the 2023 championships, Ancy’s second appearance she narrowly missed the podium last time, finishing fourth. Mayookha Johny in 2011 was the last Indian Gold Medal winner with a jump of 6.56m.
