As the race for selection to the 2026 Asian Games intensifies, Indian recurve archer Komalika Bari finds herself at a crucial juncture in her career.

Once heralded as one of India’s brightest young prospects after her historic junior achievements, Komalika is now focused on translating that promise into consistent performances at the senior level. Competing at the Khelo India Tribal Games 2026 in Raipur, the 24-year-old enters not just as a participant but as a figure of inspiration and as an athlete determined to reassert her place among India’s elite.

From Junior Glory to Senior Challenges

Komalika’s rise in Indian archery was rapid and remarkable. In 2021, she etched her name in history by becoming only the second Indian woman recurve archer after Deepika Kumari to win both the World Cadet and World Junior titles. The achievement placed her firmly among the most promising talents in the sport.

However, the transition from junior success to senior consistency has not been seamless. Like many athletes making that leap, Komalika has faced the challenges of heightened competition, pressure, and the need for technical refinement.

Despite these hurdles, she remains firmly in contention, currently part of the national training group and within the top 16 archers in India. With the Asian Games selection trials approaching, every competition including the Tribal Games has taken on added significance.

Komalika’s preparation has been both structured and intensive. Training out of Pune, she has focused not only on technical improvements but also on mental conditioning—an often decisive factor in precision sports like archery.

“The emphasis is not just on technique anymore. Mental strength plays a huge role in performance, especially when the margins are so small,” she noted.

Her approach reflects a broader understanding of elite sport, where consistency under pressure often defines success. By participating in multiple competitions, she aims to build match sharpness while maintaining a disciplined training schedule.

A Platform Beyond Medals

While the immediate goal remains Asian Games qualification, Komalika views the Khelo India Tribal Games through a wider lens. For her, the event represents an opportunity to inspire the next generation of athletes from tribal communities. “I had role models when I was growing up, and seeing them compete motivated me. I want to be that inspiration for others now,” she said.

The Tribal Games, with their multi-sport format and national reach, provide a rare platform for young athletes from underrepresented regions to witness elite performers up close. Komalika’s presence adds both visibility and credibility to the event.

Komalika’s story is rooted in perseverance. Hailing from Jamshedpur, she began archery at the age of 12, supported by her mother, an anganwadi worker who recognised her potential early. Financial constraints meant that access to proper equipment was a challenge. In her early days, Komalika trained with makeshift bamboo bows a testament to her determination and adaptability.

Her journey to the Tata Archery Academy, one of India’s premier training centres, was equally demanding. She cycled nearly 18 kilometres daily to attend training sessions, a routine that shaped her discipline and resilience.

Under the guidance of experienced coaches, she gradually honed her skills, eventually rising through the ranks to achieve international success at the junior level.

With the Asian Games and the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics in sight, Komalika’s focus is clearly long-term. While selection for the upcoming continental event remains a priority, her ultimate ambition lies in representing India at the Olympics and competing for medals on the biggest stage.

“My journey has had ups and downs, but that’s part of sport. The key is to keep working hard and moving forward,” she reflected. This mindset will be crucial as she navigates the final phase of selection trials, where competition is intense and consistency is paramount.

Tribal Games as a Catalyst

Komalika also emphasised the broader impact of the Khelo India Tribal Games, particularly in terms of talent identification and development. “These Games have the potential to transform the ecosystem. They bring multiple sports together and give athletes exposure that is otherwise hard to access,” she said.

Her own experience at the Khelo India University Games, where she won a silver medal, reinforces her belief in the platform’s ability to nurture talent.

For Komalika Bari, the Khelo India Tribal Games 2026 represent more than just another competition. It is a stage to rebuild momentum, inspire future athletes, and reaffirm her credentials as a contender for major international events. As she continues her pursuit of excellence, balancing ambition with resilience, Komalika stands as a reminder that success in sport is not just about talent—but about persistence, adaptability, and belief.
