Indian tennis player Vaishnavi Adkar is enjoying a defining phase of her career, and the state of Karnataka has played a central role in her recent breakthrough.

Fresh from winning the ITF W35 Kalaburagi title, Adkar has capped off a remarkable few weeks that also saw her finish runner-up at the prestigious KPB Trust ITF Women’s Open W100 in Bengaluru and earn selection for India’s Billie Jean King Cup Asia-Oceania squad. The 2026 season has marked a turning point for the young Indian, with consistent performances on home soil helping her rapidly climb the international rankings and establish herself as one of India’s promising tennis talents.

A Breakthrough Title in Kalaburagi

Adkar’s latest milestone came in Kalaburagi, where she clinched the ITF W35 title, completing an impressive run that further reinforced her growing confidence on the professional circuit. The victory followed closely on the heels of her runner-up finish at the ITF W100 Bengaluru event, making Karnataka a particularly special venue in her journey.

The Kalaburagi triumph not only added a professional title to her name but also strengthened her upward movement in the WTA rankings. With the points from her recent performances set to be added, Adkar is projected to break into the world’s top 400, a significant step forward for the Indian player. Just a few weeks ago, she was ranked around No. 690 in the world, but her performances in Karnataka have propelled her to a career-best ranking of No. 466, reflecting the scale of her progress.

Learning from a Grand Slam Champion

One of the major influences behind Adkar’s recent improvement has been the mentorship and guidance of two-time Grand Slam champion Rohan Bopanna, one of India’s most accomplished tennis players.

Adkar credited conversations with Bopanna for helping her rethink certain aspects of her game and career direction. “We spoke about a few things and that made me realise that the move could be the right one for me,” she said.

“Having someone with that level of experience, someone who has been world number one and competed at the highest level for so many years, is really valuable. Getting inputs from him and learning from that experience, along with working with the team at the academy, has been very helpful for me as I look to improve and move forward in my career.”

For a rising Indian player, the opportunity to learn from someone who has competed at the very highest levels of the sport provides invaluable insights into both the technical and mental aspects of professional tennis.

Wildcard Opportunity That Changed Everything

Another key factor in Adkar’s rise was the opportunity provided by the Karnataka State Lawn Tennis Association (KSLTA). The association granted her a wildcard entry into the ITF W100 Bengaluru tournament, one of the biggest women’s tennis events held in India. Adkar made full use of that opportunity by reaching the final, becoming the first Indian woman to reach the final of a W100-level tournament or higher since Sania Mirza in 2009.

The result proved to be a turning point in her career. “I’m really grateful to KSLTA for giving me the wildcard opportunities,” Adkar said. “I wasn’t really expecting it, so it meant a lot that they showed that belief in me. I’m happy that I was able to make the most of the opportunity and it really helped my ranking as well.”

Billie Jean King Cup Call-Up

Her strong performances have also earned her a spot in India’s squad for the upcoming Billie Jean King Cup Asia-Oceania tournament, which will take place in New Delhi next month. For Adkar, the opportunity to represent the country in a team competition carries special significance.

“Tennis is mostly an individual sport, so getting the chance to be part of a team event like the Billie Jean King Cup and representing India is very special,” she said. “I’m really looking forward to it and I hope I can contribute to the team in whatever way possible.”

The Billie Jean King Cup is one of the most prestigious events in women’s tennis, and the selection marks another important milestone in Adkar’s rapidly developing career.

Focus on Key Areas of Improvement

In recent months, Adkar has also worked extensively on improving key elements of her game.

She highlighted serve and return as two areas she has prioritised in training. “Two of the main things we have been working on are the serve and the return because those are the shots that start every point,” she explained.

The physical demands of modern tennis have also led her to focus on strength and fitness.

“At the same time, the physical aspect of the game has become very important in modern tennis, so I’ve been focusing a lot on improving that as well.” These improvements have been visible in her recent performances, where she has shown greater consistency and composure in long matches.

Playing with Freedom

Beyond technical improvements, Adkar believes a change in mindset has also contributed to her recent success. “This year I told myself that I just want to enjoy playing more and have fun on court, because that’s the reason I started playing this sport in the first place,” she said.

“When I was able to play with that mindset and not put too much pressure on myself, the results started coming.” The shift toward playing with greater freedom appears to have helped unlock her best tennis.

Overcoming Injury Setback

Adkar’s journey has not been without challenges. During her junior career, she suffered a major setback when she sustained an ACL tear shortly after winning her first ITF junior title. The injury required surgery and forced her to spend nearly eight months away from competition, a difficult period for a young athlete. “It was a very tough period mentally because it came at a time when I needed to keep earning points and progressing,” she recalled.

However, the recovery period eventually helped her build greater physical strength.

“Coming back from surgery is always difficult psychologically because that fear is there. But during my recovery we worked a lot on my strength and fitness, and when I returned to competition, I was physically stronger than before. In a way it turned out to be a blessing in disguise.”

Throughout her journey, Adkar credits her parents for their unwavering support. “My parents have been supportive throughout. Even when the results weren’t coming early on, they never put any pressure on me. They always told me that as long as I was enjoying what I was doing, that was the most important thing.”

As Vaishnavi Adkar continues her rise in professional tennis, her recent success in Karnataka may well be remembered as the moment when her career truly began to take flight.
