FC Goa captain Sandesh Jhingan produced a decisive moment late in the game to rescue a 1-1 draw against Chennaiyin FC in their Indian Super League 2025-26 clash at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Chennai on Sunday.
In a match defined by missed chances and tactical battles, Jhingan’s 87th-minute header ensured the Gaurs extended their unbeaten run, even as they were held to a third consecutive draw.
The result keeps FC Goa fourth in the standings with 10 points, while Chennaiyin FC, despite a spirited performance, remain in the lower half of the table with five points. Jhingan’s commanding display at both ends of the pitch earned him the Player of the Match award.
Even First Half Sets the Tone
The contest began with both teams showing intent but lacking precision in the final third. Chennaiyin FC, set up in a compact 4-5-1 system by head coach Clifford Miranda, looked to control midfield spaces and break quickly, while FC Goa, under Manolo Márquez, relied on structured build-up play and width.
FC Goa created the first opportunity in the eighth minute when Brison Fernandes tested goalkeeper Mohammad Nawaz, who gathered comfortably. Chennaiyin responded almost immediately, with Maheson Singh coming close twice—first striking the post in the 11th minute and then forcing a sharp save from Hrithik Tiwari with a powerful long-range effort.
As the half progressed, both sides traded half-chances without truly asserting dominance. Irfan Yadwad saw an effort blocked inside the box, while Pritam Kotal headed wide from a set-piece opportunity. At the other end, Dejan Dražić attempted to break the deadlock with a long-range strike, but Nawaz remained alert.

Despite the attacking intent, the lack of composure in front of goal meant the teams went into the break level at 0-0, with neither side able to capitalise on promising moments.
Yadwad Strikes After the Break
Chennaiyin FC emerged sharper in the second half and were rewarded almost immediately. In the 48th minute, a defensive lapse from FC Goa proved costly. Sahil Tavora’s misplaced pass in a dangerous area allowed Irfan Yadwad to intercept and finish calmly into the bottom-left corner, giving the hosts a deserved 1-0 lead.
The goal injected confidence into Chennaiyin’s play. Yadwad continued to trouble the defence, testing Tiwari again from a tight angle shortly after the opener. Chennaiyin’s ability to transition quickly and exploit spaces put Goa under sustained pressure during this phase.

Trailing for the first time in the match, FC Goa responded by increasing their tempo and making tactical adjustments around the hour mark. Márquez introduced fresh legs to add urgency and width, allowing Goa to dominate possession as they searched for a way back into the contest.
However, Chennaiyin’s defensive structure held firm. The hosts remained compact, limiting Goa largely to long-range efforts. Aakash Sangwan attempted to break through with shots from distance and a direct free-kick, but neither troubled Nawaz significantly.
As the clock ticked down, the pattern of play remained consistent Goa controlling possession but struggling to create clear-cut chances, while Chennaiyin defended resolutely and looked to hit on the counter.
With time running out, FC Goa finally found the breakthrough through a familiar route set-pieces. In the 87th minute, a well-delivered corner from Dražić found Jhingan, who rose above the defence to power a header into the net. The goal was a testament to Jhingan’s leadership and aerial dominance, qualities that have defined his role in the side. At a moment when Goa needed composure and presence, their captain delivered.
Late Drama but No Winner
The equaliser shifted momentum entirely in Goa’s favour as they pushed aggressively for a late winner in stoppage time. Nawaz was called into action multiple times, producing crucial saves to deny Abdul Rabeeh and others as Goa threw numbers forward.
Chennaiyin, however, also had a chance to snatch victory. Substitute Daniel Lalhlimpuia found himself in a promising position inside the box but failed to convert, firing over the bar in what proved to be the final major opportunity of the match.

From a tactical standpoint, the match highlighted contrasting strengths. Chennaiyin’s disciplined defensive structure and effective transitions caused problems for Goa, particularly in the second half. However, their inability to sustain attacking pressure and close out the game ultimately cost them.
For FC Goa, the result reflects both resilience and areas for improvement. While their ability to dominate possession and respond under pressure remains a strength, the lack of cutting edge in the final third continues to be a concern, especially against well-organised defences.
For Chennaiyin FC, the draw will feel like a missed opportunity, particularly after taking the lead early in the second half. Their performance, however, showed signs of cohesion and tactical discipline that could serve them well in upcoming fixtures.
FC Goa, meanwhile, will take confidence from extending their unbeaten run, but three consecutive draws suggest a need to convert control into wins if they are to remain in contention at the top end of the table.
In the end, it was a contest decided by fine margins one moment of defensive lapse, and one moment of leadership brilliance. And once again, Sandesh Jhingan proved why he remains one of Indian football’s most reliable figures in high-pressure situations.
