Indian U16 team had a great performance on the opening day of the 3rd Asian Youth Games 2025, putting together a hat-trick of wins in the 3×3 women’s basketball event.

In a dominant display of skill, teamwork, and composure, the young Indian cagers stormed past Sri Lanka (21-6), Maldives (21-14), and Palestine (21-6) to finish the day undefeated (3-0), establishing themselves as early favorites in the group stage of the continental competition being held in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.

India’s campaign tipped off in emphatic fashion as the girls made a statement right from their first possession against Sri Lanka. Displaying excellent ball movement, high-pressure defense, and aggressive rebounding, India raced to a 21-6 win, wrapping up the match with nearly two minutes to spare.

The team’s balance was evident every player on the floor contributed both offensively and defensively. Quick passes around the perimeter opened up lanes for easy finishes, while Sri Lanka struggled to counter India’s speed and transition play.

It was the perfect start confident, clinical, and commanding.

Resilience on Display: Comeback Win Over Maldives

If the first game showcased dominance, the second underlined the team’s character and mental toughness. Facing Maldives, India found themselves trailing 7-11 midway through the contest after a sluggish defensive start. The Maldivian shooters capitalized on early space and rhythm, forcing India into a timeout to regroup.

What followed was a stunning turnaround. India went on a 14-3 run, locking down Maldives defensively while rediscovering their offensive flow. Crisp passing and patient playmaking paid off, as India’s forwards began finishing strongly inside the paint. The final score 21-14 not only gave India their second win but also highlighted the team’s ability to adapt under pressure and close out games.

This was arguably the team’s most impressive win of the day, coming from behind and proving that composure can match physical strength at this level.

In their third and final match of the day, the Indian girls looked unstoppable once again, dismantling Palestine by another 21-6 margin. By now, the rhythm and confidence were undeniable. India dominated from the outset, pressing high, forcing turnovers, and converting fast-break opportunities with ruthless efficiency. The transition game was particularly effective defensive rebounds instantly turned into offensive chances, with the ball rarely sticking in one player’s hands. Every possession reflected intent and cohesion.

By the final whistle, India had sealed their third straight victory, capping off a flawless opening day that showcased both tactical maturity and physical dominance.

India’s U16 girls’ 3×3 squad stands out not just for their athleticism but for their understanding of the 3×3 format a faster, sharper, and more tactical variant of traditional basketball. The ability to read match tempo, make quick defensive switches, and execute set plays in limited shot-clock scenarios has been central to their success.

The chemistry between the players many of whom have trained together under the Basketball Federation of India’s youth development program is evident. Their communication and court awareness have set them apart from most teams in the opening round. With three wins from three matches, India currently tops their group and has established themselves as one of the most complete sides in the tournament.

What’s Next for the Young Hoopsters

The journey, however, is far from over. India faces a tough second round of fixtures on October 26, where they will take on:

  • 🇮🇳 India vs Mongolia – ⏰ 3:45 PM IST
  • 🇮🇳 India vs Indonesia – ⏰ 6:30 PM IST
  • 🇮🇳 India vs Thailand – ⏰ 8:00 PM IST

These matches will determine the quarterfinal seeding, and the team will be keen to maintain its momentum. Mongolia and Indonesia, both known for their physical style, will pose fresh challenges. If India maintains its defensive discipline and offensive sharpness, the young cagers could very well secure a place in the knockout stages with an unbeaten record.
