Singapore Open Super 750: A Crucial Day of Action for Indian Shuttlers

The Round of 32 at the 2025 Singapore Open Super 750 is underway, with a packed day of matches ahead for Indian badminton players across categories.

The prestigious BWF tournament, part of the World Tour calendar, features multiple Indian entries in men’s and women’s singles, women’s doubles, and mixed doubles events. Here’s a complete overview of India’s Day 2 matchups and head-to-head context from the official schedule.

Early Start for Aakarshi and Lakshya

The day began early for Aakarshi Kashyap, who had a tough opener against World No. 8 Han Yue of China. The head-to-head stood at 0–4 in favor of the Chinese shuttler before the match, putting Kashyap under pressure to break her losing streak.

Soon after, Lakshya Sen stepped onto Court 1 to face Chinese Taipei’s Lin Chun Yi. The Indian ace trailed 0–2 in their past encounters and was looking for his first victory over the left-handed opponent. With Lakshya trying to rediscover consistency this season, the Singapore Open presented a timely opportunity.

Satwik-Chirag Lead the Doubles Challenge

Top men’s doubles pair Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty, one of India’s best medal prospects at every major event, had a first-round clash with Malaysia’s Choong Hon Jian and Mohd Haikal. The Indian pair began their campaign aiming to establish rhythm after a few early exits in recent tournaments.

In the mixed doubles category, Rohan Kapoor and Ruthvika Gadde teamed up to take on the American pair of Chen Zhi Yi and Francesca Corbett on Court 3. Although a relatively new Indian pairing, Rohan and Ruthvika showed promise during national circuits and hoped to make a mark at the international level.

Unnati Hooda, one of India’s fastest-rising women’s singles players, faced World No. 10 Wang Zhi Yi from China. With the head-to-head locked at 0–0, it was an open challenge for the teenager to upset the odds.

Afternoon Session: Spotlight on Women’s Doubles

In the women’s singles draw, Anupama Upadhyaya took on Sung Shuo Yun of Chinese Taipei in a first-time encounter. Anupama, steadily climbing the world rankings, was keen to build momentum with a solid first-round showing.

Women’s doubles also featured prominently with four Indian pairs in action:

•Vaishnavi K. & Alisha Khan met Australia’s Gronya Somerville and Angela Wu at 3:10 PM on Court 3. This was a debut outing for the young Indian pair on the Super 750 stage.

•Amrutha Prakash & Sonali Singh faced Japan’s experienced duo Nami Matsuyama and Chiharu Shida, one of the top pairs in the world. A challenging draw for the Indians, but valuable experience against elite opposition.

•Treesa Jolly & Gayatri Gopichand, the highest-ranked Indian pair, returned to the circuit with a 1–0 head-to-head advantage over Chang Chih Ya and Yang Ching Tun of Chinese Taipei. Their 6:20 PM match on Court 1 marked a crucial step in their comeback trail after injury setbacks.

In total, 13 Indian players featured on Day 1 of the main draw, showcasing the depth of India’s badminton bench. While the likes of Satwik-Chirag, Treesa-Gayatri, and Lakshya Sen aim to go deep into the tournament, young names like Unnati Hooda, Vaishnavi-Alisha, and Rohan-Ruthvika represent the next generation hoping to break through.

With several tough draws, the Singapore Open is also a litmus test for Indian players chasing Olympic qualification points. Each match, even in the early rounds, is crucial in the run-up to Paris 2028.
