India’s sporting landscape is set for a historic transformation with the Pune Grand Tour (PGT) 2026 earning Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) Class 2.2 status, marking the country’s entry into the global professional cycling calendar.
Scheduled from January 19 to 23, 2026, the multi-stage road race will span 437 km across four stages, bringing international competition, Olympic qualification points, and world-class sporting standards to Indian soil for the first time. Organized by the Pune District Administration and the Government of Maharashtra in collaboration with the Cycling Federation of India (CFI), the event is designed to act as a catalyst for sporting, infrastructural, and cultural transformation firmly positioning India on the UCI Asia Tour map.
The UCI 2.2 classification confirms the Pune Grand Tour as a professional multi-day road race open to UCI Continental Teams, national squads, and elite regional clubs, while excluding the world’s top-tier WorldTour teams. This structure ensures a highly competitive yet balanced field, offering Indian riders the chance to test themselves against international professionals without being overshadowed by powerhouse European teams. More importantly, the PGT 2026 carries Olympic qualification points, meaning that results here will directly contribute to India’s 2028 Los Angeles Games quotas a first for a race held in the country. For Indian cyclists, who typically travel abroad to earn ranking points, this represents a major leap forward in accessibility and opportunity.
Calling it a “pivotal moment in Indian sporting history,” Jitendra Dudi, IAS, Pune District Collector and administrative in-charge of the race, said,
“The Pune Grand Tour is a hallmark project bringing together sport, tourism, and community pride. This inaugural edition will lay the groundwork for long-term infrastructure and make Pune a permanent fixture on the UCI calendar.”

The five-day event will feature four competitive stages across nine talukas in the Pune district. The route reduced from an initial 684 km after UCI technical assessments prioritizes safety and international racing standards while retaining the region’s geographic diversity. From the urban stretches of Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad to the hilly climbs of Mulshi and Maval, and the rural backroads of Purander and Baramati, the race will test endurance, strategy, and climbing ability, while also spotlighting Maharashtra’s culture and topography.
Each stage will be conducted on fully closed roads, ensuring safety and compliance with UCI protocols. Feeding and litter zones, medical stations, and neutral service vehicles will operate under international supervision.
Infrastructure Overhaul and Rs 532 Crore Investment
The PGT 2026 has triggered an unprecedented ₹532 crore public infrastructure upgrade, encompassing 437 km of road resurfacing, speed breaker removal, and drainage cover repairs.
- The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) allocated ₹145 crore for city-level upgrades.
- The Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) is executing ₹286 crore worth of regional road improvements.
- Contractors are bound by strict December 10, 2025 completion deadlines, facing penalties up to ₹1 lakh per day for delays.
These aren’t routine civic works the resurfacing uses high-performance bituminous concrete with sensor-controlled grading to meet professional cycling standards. The upgrades will leave behind a permanent “UCI-compliant road network”, doubling as a training and tourism asset long after the race concludes.
Ensuring rider safety across urban and rural zones is the event’s most ambitious operational challenge. UCI mandates sealed race routes, full traffic closures, and high-standard protective barriers a first for an Indian event of this scale.
Emergency protocols include:
- Dedicated hospitals and trauma units along the race route.
- Helicopter evacuation readiness for serious accidents.
- Advanced route security and training programs for police and volunteers to prevent unauthorized entry during racing.
These safety upgrades are expected to permanently enhance Pune’s emergency response infrastructure one of the event’s lasting civic benefits.
CFI’s Vision and India’s Rising Cycling Identity
For the Cycling Federation of India, the PGT 2026 is the culmination of years of strategic planning. CFI President Pankaj Singh hailed it as “a proud milestone in India’s cycling evolution.”
“Hosting a UCI 2.2 race reflects India’s readiness to embrace professional cycling at the global level. It provides Indian athletes an equal stage to compete with international pros and earn ranking points on home soil,” he said.
UCI President David Lappartient echoed this sentiment: “We are delighted to welcome the Pune Grand Tour to the UCI calendar. It marks a significant milestone for Indian cycling and demonstrates the region’s growing commitment to hosting world-class events.”
The race is expected to draw over 200 international cyclists from 50 countries, generating a surge in tourism, hospitality, and sports commerce across Pune. For locals, the event aims to rekindle the city’s identity as “The City of Cycles,” encouraging sustainable mobility and community engagement. Beyond 2026, the administration plans to institutionalize the PGT as an annual event, with an eventual goal to upgrade to UCI 2.1 or ProSeries status joining Asia’s most prestigious races such as the Tour of Langkawi and Tour of Qinghai Lake.
There’s also a national dimension: the high-performance course will double as a National Training Circuit for Indian teams, enabling CFI to conduct year-round elite training camps and Olympic preparation programs in world-class conditions.
The Pune Grand Tour 2026 is more than a sporting spectacle it’s a blueprint for India’s global sporting ambitions. The event’s success will demonstrate the country’s administrative, logistical, and infrastructural readiness to host large-scale international competitions a key stepping stone in India’s long-term vision for the 2036 Olympic bid.
If executed successfully, the PGT 2026 will not just redefine Indian cycling it will reaffirm India’s growing stature as a serious player in the global sporting ecosystem.
