India’s campaign to qualify for the World Relays in the 4x100m mixed relay category has hit a setback, with the national team slipping out of the qualification bracket after a strong early push.
According to the latest update on the Road to World Relays rankings, India’s mixed 4x100m relay squad has dropped to 25th place, narrowly missing out on the top 24 required to secure a berth at the prestigious global event.
The Indian quartet had earlier clocked a national record timing of 42.30 seconds at the Open Relays, a performance that initially placed them 19th in the qualification standings. The effort sparked optimism that the team was on course to earn a spot in the global relay event for the first time in this category. However, the situation has changed following a wave of faster performances from other nations in recent competitions.
Since India’s record-setting run, six nations have recorded faster times, pushing the Indian team down the rankings. Among the teams to surpass India were Nigeria (41.44), Kenya (41.70), Poland (41.62), Ukraine (42.19), New Zealand (41.30), and the United States (40.84). These improved timings reshaped the qualification landscape, forcing India down to 25th place just one spot outside the qualification cutoff.

The top 24 teams on the Road to World Relays list will earn direct entry to the World Relays, which serve as a key qualification pathway for major international championships. With the current standings, India’s 4x100m mixed relay team now wait for withdrawals or disqualifications to climb back into the qualification zone.

Despite the setback in the 4x100m mixed relay, there remains in contention for three relay events. India’s men’s 4x400m relay team has qualified comfortably. The squad has consistently delivered strong performances over the past year and remains one of India’s most reliable medal prospects in relay events.
In addition, India’s mixed 4x400m relay and women’s 4x100m relay teams have also made the cut. The mixed 4x400m team currently sits 22nd in the standings, while the women’s 4x100m squad is placed 23rd, both still within the top 24 qualification bracket.
Relay events have become increasingly competitive globally, with nations investing heavily in relay programs to secure Olympic and World Championship qualification. For India, recent years have seen a steady rise in performance standards, particularly in the 4x400m category. The current scenario highlights both the progress made and the challenges ahead, as margins for qualification continue to shrink.
The Road to World Relays rankings are dynamic and subject to change as more competitions take place. India’s athletes will now be focused on delivering improved timings in upcoming meets to regain qualification positions, particularly in the 4x100m mixed relay. With the qualification window still open, the team will be hoping to produce another breakthrough performance and reclaim a spot among the top 24.
While the latest rankings have temporarily derailed India’s 4x100m mixed relay qualification hopes, the broader relay picture remains encouraging. With the men’s 4x400m team well-placed and two other relay squads still in contention, India remains firmly in the hunt for multiple relay berths at the World Relays.
