A tightly contested encounter between East Bengal FC and FC Goa ended in a 0–0 stalemate in Match 22 of the Indian Super League 2025–26 season at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan on Thursday night.

Despite several promising chances at both ends, neither side managed to find the decisive breakthrough in what ultimately became a tactical battle between two teams aiming to strengthen their positions in the early part of the league table. The result sees FC Goa provisionally occupy third place with eight points from four matches, while East Bengal sit just behind in fourth with seven points from the same number of games.

Tactical Adjustments from East Bengal

East Bengal head coach Óscar Bruzón made two changes to his starting lineup. Defender Mohamad Rakip and winger Naorem Mahesh Singh were handed their first starts of the season, replacing Jay Gupta and Anton Søjberg. Meanwhile, FC Goa boss Manolo Márquez opted to stick with the same lineup that had delivered positive results in the opening matches of the campaign.

The match began with both sides cautiously probing for openings while maintaining compact defensive shapes.

FC Goa produced the first threatening moment of the match when striker Ishan Pandita made a clever run behind the East Bengal defence to chase down a lofted pass from Serbian forward Dejan Dražić. However, East Bengal centre-back Anwar Ali produced an excellent recovery tackle to prevent Pandita from getting a clear shot on goal.

Following the early scare, East Bengal gradually began to control possession in midfield, circulating the ball patiently as Goa looked to exploit counter-attacking opportunities.

The first major chance of the game fell to East Bengal around the 15-minute mark. Mahesh Singh played an incisive through ball to winger Bipin Singh, who delivered a precise cross into the penalty area. Striker Youssef Ezzejjari found himself completely unmarked in front of goal, but he failed to capitalize on the opportunity as his shot sailed well over the crossbar.

The missed chance proved costly as FC Goa soon created opportunities of their own.

Gill Keeps East Bengal in the Game

FC Goa produced their best attacking spell shortly afterward. A slick passing move involving Ayush Dev Chhetri and Boris Singh carved open the East Bengal defence. The move ended with Brison Fernandes firing a shot on target, but East Bengal goalkeeper Prabhsukhan Singh Gill reacted sharply to make an excellent save.

Moments later, Boris Singh came agonizingly close to scoring when his right-footed attempt struck the post and bounced away. The visitors looked increasingly dangerous during this phase, testing East Bengal’s defensive organization.

Rashid Strikes the Crossbar

East Bengal responded with a long-range effort from Iraqi midfielder Mohamad Rashid. Rashid unleashed a powerful strike from distance that slipped through the hands of the FC Goa goalkeeper before crashing against the crossbar. The chance highlighted the attacking intent of the hosts, but once again the woodwork denied them a breakthrough.

Despite the flurry of chances, the teams headed into halftime with the score still locked at 0–0.

The second half unfolded in a far more cautious manner as both teams tightened their defensive structures. Opportunities became increasingly scarce as midfield battles dominated proceedings. Coaches from both sides introduced substitutions in an attempt to inject fresh energy into their attacks. However, neither side was able to significantly alter the rhythm of the game.

FC Goa came closest to breaking the deadlock in the latter stages when substitute Abdul Rabeeh set up Raynier Fernandes just outside the penalty area. Fernandes attempted a right-footed shot from the edge of the box, but his effort sailed over the crossbar.

The chance proved to be Goa’s final meaningful opportunity of the match. East Bengal Push in Stoppage Time. In the closing moments of the match, East Bengal attempted to increase the pressure on the Goa defence. The hosts pushed more players forward during added time, searching for a late winner in front of the Kolkata crowd.

However, FC Goa remained composed defensively and managed to clear the danger each time the ball entered their penalty area.

When the final whistle blew, both teams had to settle for a point each in what became the first ever goalless draw between East Bengal and FC Goa. Despite the lack of goals, the match delivered an entertaining contest filled with tactical battles, near misses, and moments of defensive resilience.

FC Goa’s Miguel Ferreira was named Player of the Match for his solid performance in midfield.

The draw ensures that both teams remain firmly in the upper half of the standings as the early stages of the season continue to unfold. For FC Goa, maintaining their unbeaten start will be encouraging as they continue to chase the league leaders.

East Bengal, meanwhile, will take positives from their defensive organisation but may reflect on missed opportunities that could have secured all three points. As the season progresses, both sides will look to convert such competitive performances into victories in what promises to be another tightly contested Indian Super League campaign.
