The Indian hockey team were held to a 2–2 draw by South Africa in the second Test, a match that told a familiar story of territorial control, chances created, but a failure to fully capitalise on dominance.

While India walked away undefeated, the draw will feel like a missed opportunity given the balance of play and the numbers on the stat sheet.

India began the contest with purpose and clarity. From the opening minutes, they pressed high, circulated the ball quickly through midfield, and looked to stretch South Africa on the flanks. That early intent was rewarded when India took a 1–0 lead in the first half, the goal coming from sustained pressure inside the South African circle. The early breakthrough settled India into a rhythm and forced South Africa into a more reactive approach.

Despite enjoying less possession in the opposition half South Africa surprisingly finished with 55% possession in India’s defensive half compared to India’s 45% it was India who created the more dangerous opportunities. India registered 17 shots, eight of which were on target, nearly double South Africa’s five shots on goal from nine attempts. The difference in attacking output underlined India’s ability to enter the circle consistently, though efficiency remained an issue.

The biggest turning point of the match came in the third quarter. South Africa, absorbing pressure through the first half, struck back with two unanswered goals. Defensive lapses and momentary loss of concentration allowed South Africa to punish India, turning the scoreline on its head despite India’s continued dominance in chance creation. It was a reminder that at this level, a lack of ruthlessness can quickly erase control of a game.

Penalty corners proved to be a decisive subplot. India earned a staggering 12 penalty corners over the course of the match but could only convert twice. South Africa, on the other hand, failed to score from any of their six penalty corners, but India’s inability to translate dominance in set-pieces into goals ultimately prevented them from pulling away. Twelve penalty corners for just two goals will be a concern for the coaching staff, particularly as this remains an area India have invested heavily in.

To South Africa’s credit, their defensive unit and goalkeeper stood tall under relentless pressure. The South African goalkeeper made eight saves, many of them from close range, compared to just two saves at the Indian end. Those numbers underline how much India attacked and how frequently they tested the opposition goalkeeper, only to be denied by sharp reflexes and last-ditch defending.

India showed character to respond after conceding twice. Rather than panicking, they pushed forward with patience and regained momentum, eventually scoring the equaliser to restore parity. The goal was a reward for sustained attacking pressure and reflected the team’s ability to stay composed even when the game briefly slipped out of control.

Discipline and turnovers were evenly matched. India committed 28 unforced errors to South Africa’s 26, while both teams conceded a similar number of turnovers. Intercepts marginally favored South Africa, but it was not enough for them to consistently disrupt India’s build-up play. The card count remained low, with both teams keeping their composure in a hard-fought contest.

From an Indian perspective, the draw offers mixed signals. The positives are clear: shot creation, circle entries, and territorial pressure suggest the attacking structure is functioning well. However, the inability to convert prolonged dominance—particularly from penalty corners and momentary defensive lapses prevented India from turning superiority into victory.

For South Africa, this was a result built on resilience, goalkeeping excellence, and taking key moments when they came. Absorbing pressure and striking clinically allowed them to walk away with a deserved draw despite being under sustained attack for large portions of the match.

As the series progresses, India will look to sharpen their execution in the final third and demand greater returns from set-pieces. On another day, this could have been a comfortable win.

Instead, it stands as a reminder that control alone is not enough without finishing to match.
