Indian gymnastics registered a significant milestone on the international stage as Harschit Damodharan and Nishad Milind Naravane advanced to the finals of the prestigious DTB Pokal 2026 in Stuttgart, Germany.

Competing against some of the strongest junior gymnasts from across the globe, the Indian duo delivered technically sound performances to secure their spots in the apparatus finals marking a major step forward for the sport in the country.

The DTB Pokal, now in its 41st edition, is one of the most respected competitions in artistic gymnastics and serves as a key benchmarking event in the international calendar. Featuring over 500 participants from 24 nations, including powerhouse countries such as China, the United States, Ukraine, and Hungary, the tournament provided a high-performance environment where emerging talents are tested against the very best.

Harschit Damodharan Shines on Vault

Harschit Damodharan’s qualification for the Junior Men’s Vault final stands out as one of the most impressive performances by an Indian gymnast in recent years. He finished fourth in the qualification round with a combined score of 13.525, comfortably securing a place among the top contenders.

Under the FIG rules, gymnasts are required to perform two vaults from different groups, with the final score calculated as the average of both attempts. Harschit executed this requirement with precision and composure. His first vault (13.600) demonstrated strong height and control, while his second vault (13.450) was particularly notable for its execution score of 9.150 one of the highest in the field.

What set Harschit apart was his execution quality. In a discipline where even minor landing errors can significantly impact scores, his ability to maintain form and stability ensured minimal deductions. Despite a slight penalty on his second vault, his consistency placed him ahead of several competitors from established gymnastics nations.

This performance highlights a critical evolution in Indian gymnastics an increasing emphasis on execution and technical clarity rather than just difficulty. While the top-ranked gymnasts from Ukraine marginally edged ahead, Harschit’s showing indicates that Indian athletes are closing the gap at the junior level.

Nishad Naravane Excels on Pommel Horse

Equally significant was Nishad Milind Naravane’s qualification for the Junior Men’s Pommel Horse final. With a score of 12.750, Nishad finished seventh in the qualification round, securing his place in one of the most technically demanding apparatus finals.

The pommel horse is widely regarded as one of the toughest events in artistic gymnastics due to its reliance on rhythm, balance, and precision. Nishad’s routine stood out for its execution, earning him an impressive E-score of 8.750—higher than several gymnasts with greater difficulty scores.

This reflects a strategic approach by the Indian contingent. Instead of pushing for higher difficulty at the cost of execution, the focus has clearly been on delivering clean, error-free routines. In junior competitions, where judges are particularly strict on form, this approach has proven effective.

Nishad’s performance also underscores his specialization in the pommel horse. While his scores on other apparatuses indicate room for development, his ability to deliver under pressure on this event is a strong indicator of his potential moving forward.

The scale and competitiveness of the DTB Pokal make these achievements even more significant. Nations like China and the United States continue to dominate junior gymnastics, with highly structured development systems and deep talent pools.

China, in particular, showcased its dominance by winning the Junior Men’s Team Challenge with a commanding score, while American gymnasts impressed with their balance between difficulty and execution. Ukraine and Hungary also demonstrated strength, especially in power-based events like vault. In this context, India’s presence in multiple apparatus finals is a clear indicator of progress. The ability to compete and succeed against such established programs signals a shift in the global gymnastics landscape.

Beyond Harschit and Nishad, the Indian contingent showed encouraging signs of overall improvement. Gymnasts like Prasun Amalnerkar and Mohd Zaid Ansari contributed valuable scores across apparatuses, reflecting growing depth within the team. While India still trails leading nations in terms of difficulty scores and overall team consistency, the foundation is clearly being laid.

The performances in Stuttgart suggest that Indian gymnastics is moving towards a more structured and competitive framework.

The qualification of two Indian gymnasts into apparatus finals at a competition of this level is not an isolated achievement it is the result of gradual systemic improvements in training, exposure, and technical preparation. However, challenges remain. To compete consistently at the highest level, Indian gymnasts will need to increase their difficulty scores while maintaining execution quality. Building depth across all apparatuses and ensuring sustained support systems will also be critical.

As the finals approach, both Harschit and Nishad will aim to convert their strong qualification performances into podium finishes. While the competition will be intense, their presence alone marks a significant achievement. More importantly, their performances serve as inspiration for the next generation of Indian gymnasts. They demonstrate that with the right preparation and mindset, Indian athletes can compete with and challenge the best in the world.

The DTB Pokal 2026 may well be remembered as a turning point a moment when Indian gymnastics signaled its arrival on the global stage.
