The All India Football Federation (AIFF) has confirmed that the 2025–26 season of the Indian Football League (IFL) will commence on February 27, 2026, marking a new chapter for India’s rebranded second-tier competition.
Formerly known as the I-League, the IFL enters the upcoming campaign with structural changes aimed at enhancing competitiveness and sustaining interest across the season. The opening day will feature two fixtures: Namdhari FC will host Aizawl FC, while Chanmari FC take on Gokulam Kerala FC.
A Two-Stage Competitive Format
The 2025–26 edition will feature 10 clubs and adopt a two-stage format, a structure proposed by the participating teams and approved by the AIFF. Stage 1 will follow a traditional double round-robin system, with each team playing home-and-away fixtures. This phase is designed to establish a clear competitive hierarchy while ensuring every club has an equal opportunity to accumulate points across balanced fixtures.
Once Stage 1 concludes, the league table will determine progression into Stage 2, which splits the competition into two distinct pathways:
- The top five teams will enter the Championship Round, competing in another home-and-away format to decide the league title.
- The bottom five teams will move into a centralised Relegation Round, where survival becomes the primary objective.
Crucially, all points accumulated in Stage 1 will carry forward into Stage 2. This continuity ensures that early-season performance retains its significance and prevents artificial resets that could distort the competitive narrative.
The team finishing at the top of the table at the end of Stage 2 will be crowned Indian Football League champions and earn promotion to the Indian Super League (ISL) for the 2026–27 season. With promotion and relegation now embedded into India’s top-flight ecosystem, the IFL has acquired heightened importance within the national football pyramid.
The revised format serves multiple objectives.
First, it keeps both ends of the table relevant deeper into the season. Under a traditional single-table format, mid-table stagnation often dampens intensity in later rounds. By splitting the league after Stage 1, the AIFF ensures that clubs remain engaged in either a promotion race or a relegation battle.
Second, the Championship Round offers a concentrated, high-stakes run-in among the strongest performing sides, which could improve broadcast value and fan engagement. Meanwhile, the Relegation Round, played at a centralised venue, reduces logistical strain while maintaining competitive integrity.
Third, the carry-forward points system preserves meritocracy. Teams cannot rely on a late surge alone; consistency across the full season remains decisive.
