The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) on Wednesday officially confirmed that India has entered the bidding process to host the 2031 AFC Asian Cup, marking a significant statement of intent from the All India Football Federation (AIFF) and Indian football’s broader ambitions on the continental stage.
India is among six bidders competing for hosting rights, alongside Australia, South Korea, Kuwait, Indonesia, and a joint Central Asian bid from Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan. The strong response reflects the growing stature of the AFC Asian Cup as Asia’s premier football competition, particularly after the widely acclaimed 2023 edition in Qatar.
AFC President Sheikh Salman bin Ebrahim Al Khalifa highlighted the scale of interest as a testament to the tournament’s rising global appeal. He noted that the record number of bids underlines how firmly the Asian Cup has established itself as one of world football’s leading continental championships, both in sporting quality and commercial value.
A Strategic Shift for Indian Football
India’s decision to bid for the 2031 Asian Cup represents a notable strategic shift. The country has never hosted the tournament, and previous attempts to pursue hosting rights for earlier editions were withdrawn amid concerns over readiness and priorities. This time, however, the bid arrives with clearer alignment between the federation and the central government, reflecting a broader push to position India as a destination for major international sporting events.
The move also fits into India’s longer-term sporting vision, which includes ambitions to host the 2036 Olympic Games. Hosting the Asian Cup would serve as a major stepping stone, allowing India to showcase its infrastructure, organisational capabilities, and growing football audience.

India’s recent track record strengthens its case. The country successfully hosted the FIFA U-17 Men’s World Cup in 2017 and the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in 2022, delivering smooth logistics, strong attendance, and global broadcast reach. Those tournaments demonstrated India’s ability to manage multi-city international events under FIFA and AFC standards.
Competitive Field and Continental Balance
The competition for 2031 hosting rights is among the strongest in the tournament’s history. Australia and South Korea offer proven infrastructure, commercial stability, and experience from hosting major global events. Indonesia brings massive fan engagement and momentum from hosting the FIFA U-17 World Cup, while Kuwait represents West Asia’s continued interest in staging flagship AFC tournaments.
The joint bid from Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan is particularly significant, as it marks Central Asia’s first collective attempt to host Asia’s top football event. The AFC has, in recent years, shown interest in rotating its marquee tournaments across sub-regions to promote balanced development.
Dual Award Plan: 2031 and 2035
In a parallel development, the AFC confirmed that it may award hosting rights for both the 2031 and 2035 Asian Cups at a single Congress, following a proposal by its president. The bidding process for the 2035 edition has already drawn expressions of interest from Australia, Japan, South Korea, and Kuwait.
This dual-award strategy allows the AFC to balance growth and certainty potentially pairing an emerging market like India or Indonesia with a traditionally strong host such as Japan or Australia across the two cycles. The approach also provides long-term clarity for commercial partners, broadcasters, and sponsors in the 2029–2036 rights cycle.

With the bidding window now closed, the AFC will engage with bidding member associations to coordinate the submission of detailed bid documentation. This includes government guarantees, proposed host cities, stadium readiness, training facilities, transport plans, and security frameworks.
For India, the coming months will be critical. While the country has several large-capacity stadiums and improving transport infrastructure, the bid’s success will hinge on demonstrating football-specific readiness, efficient inter-city connectivity, and a clear legacy plan for the sport’s development.
India’s confirmed bid for the 2031 AFC Asian Cup signals renewed confidence and ambition within Indian football administration. In a crowded and competitive field, the challenge will be to convert potential into persuasion presenting a bid that convinces Asia’s football leadership that India can deliver not just a successful tournament, but a transformative one.
As the AFC prepares for inspections and evaluations, the race to host Asia’s biggest football event has truly begun.
