India U17 women’s team began their exposure tour in Russia with a 0-4 defeat against the hosts in the first of three international friendlies at the Matsesta Football Center in Sochi on April 11, 2026.

While the scoreline reflected Russia’s clinical edge, the contest offered valuable insights for head coach Pamela Conti as the Young Tigresses continue preparations for the AFC U17 Women’s Asian Cup China 2026.

Russia’s goals came through Valeria Menyailova just before half-time, followed by second-half penalties from Dana Dobrovitskaya and Alisa Klimova, before Angelina Gulyayeva added a late fourth to complete a dominant performance.

Despite the eventual margin, India started the game on a positive note, showing intent and composure in the early exchanges. The Young Tigresses looked comfortable in possession and were proactive in pressing, forcing Russia into a cautious approach in the opening phase.

India’s best chance of the first half came midway through when Redima Devi Chingkham unleashed a powerful strike from distance. The effort seemed destined for the bottom corner, but Russian goalkeeper Daria Volodicheva produced an excellent save to deny the opener. It was a moment that underlined India’s attacking potential, even against physically stronger opposition.

As the half progressed, Russia gradually began to assert control, using their physicality and structured build-up play to push India deeper. The breakthrough came in the 44th minute following a defensive lapse. Polina Frolova dispossessed Elizabed Lakra on the flank and quickly advanced the ball forward. Valeria Menyailova capitalised on the opportunity, finishing clinically at the near post to give the hosts a crucial lead just before the break.

The timing of the goal shifted momentum in Russia’s favour, forcing India to chase the game in the second half. To their credit, the Young Tigresses continued to show resilience and work rate, with players like Redima Devi, captain Bonfilia Shullai, and Alva Devi Senjam combining effectively down the left side. However, the final delivery whether crosses or shots lacked precision, preventing India from converting promising build-up play into tangible chances.

The second half proved more challenging as Russia capitalised on key moments. In the 57th minute, a penalty was awarded after a defensive scramble inside the box. Dana Dobrovitskaya stepped up and calmly converted, extending Russia’s lead to 2-0.

India’s defensive discipline came under further pressure soon after, leading to another penalty. Alisa Klimova was brought down in the area, and she made no mistake from the spot, putting Russia firmly in control at 3-0.

These moments highlighted an area of concern for India decision-making under pressure inside the penalty area. While the defensive unit worked hard throughout the match, lapses in critical situations proved costly against a side that punished mistakes efficiently.

Despite the setback, India continued to compete and showed commendable energy levels. Their pressing and willingness to engage physically were notable positives, especially considering the strength and stature of the Russian players.

Russia added a fourth goal in the 88th minute through Angelina Gulyayeva, who rounded off a well-worked move to seal the result. By then, the hosts had complete control of the game, both in terms of possession and territory.

For India, the match serves as a crucial developmental exercise rather than a definitive measure of performance. Facing European opposition of this calibre provides exposure to different tactical systems, higher physical intensity, and quicker decision-making requirements factors that are essential for growth at the youth level.

Head coach Pamela Conti’s focus will likely remain on refining structural organisation, particularly in defensive transitions and penalty-box discipline. Additionally, improving the final third efficiency turning build-up play into clear scoring opportunities will be key areas of emphasis in the remaining friendlies.

The encouraging aspect for India lies in their approach. The team did not sit back defensively but instead looked to play proactively, build from the back, and engage in midfield battles. This aligns with a long-term developmental philosophy aimed at producing technically confident and tactically aware players.

With two more friendlies remaining in Sochi, the Young Tigresses have an opportunity to respond and build on the lessons from this defeat. These matches are critical in fine-tuning combinations, testing squad depth, and preparing mentally for the challenges ahead.

The AFC U17 Women’s Asian Cup remains the primary objective, and fixtures like these are designed to simulate the level of competition India can expect at the continental stage. While the result against Russia may seem one-sided, the experience gained is invaluable.

As the campaign progresses, the emphasis will be on incremental improvement—tightening defensive organisation, enhancing attacking cohesion, and maintaining composure under pressure. For a young side in transition, these are the building blocks that will define their trajectory.

In Sochi, the result went Russia’s way convincingly. But for India, the focus remains firmly on development, adaptation, and readiness for the bigger stage that lies ahead.
