India has strengthened its position at the centre of the global shooting ecosystem after winning the hosting rights for the Asian Rifle/Pistol Championship 2027, a marquee continental event that will offer eight direct Olympic quota places for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.

The National Rifle Association of India (NRAI) confirmed the development on Tuesday following an official communication from H.E. Eng. Duaij AlOtaibi, Secretary General of the Asian Shooting Confederation (ASC), to NRAI President Shri Kalikesh Narayan Singh Deo. The championship will be staged in New Delhi, marking the second consecutive time that India will host Asia’s premier Rifle and Pistol competition.

This announcement adds to an already remarkable 2027 calendar for Indian shooting. Earlier, the International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) had awarded New Delhi the ISSF World Cup Rifle/Pistol/Shotgun 2027, scheduled for_toggle template, where 12 additional LA 2028 Olympic quota places will be available.

Together, these two elite events mean that India will host 20 Olympic quota opportunities on home soil in 2027 a rare advantage for any nation heading into an Olympic cycle.

“With two quota tournaments on home soil in the same year, this is a major boost for our athletes,” said Shri Kalikesh Narayan Singh Deo, President of NRAI.

“This gives our shooters, especially in rifle and pistol, an incredible opportunity to secure Olympic berths in familiar conditions, with home support, and without the logistical and climatic challenges of travelling abroad.” Home conditions ranging from range layouts and lighting to climate and altitude play a crucial role in shooting performance. Having two quota events in New Delhi allows Indian athletes to build long-term preparation around the same venue, creating an edge rarely available in Olympic qualification.

New Delhi emerging as Asia’s shooting capital

The back-to-back allocation of major international championships is further evidence that India, and particularly New Delhi’s Dr. Karni Singh Shooting Ranges, has become one of the most trusted destinations for global shooting.

Over the past two years alone, India has successfully hosted:

  • ISSF World Cup Final (October 2024)
  • ISSF Junior World Cup (September 2025)
  • Asian Rifle/Pistol Championship 2026 (currently underway)

The awarding of both the ISSF World Cup 2027 and Asian Championships 2027 is a direct reflection of the organisational, technical, and logistical standards delivered by the NRAI and its partners.

“This is the result of tireless work by the NRAI team,” said Mr. Pawankumar Singh, Secretary General of NRAI.

“We also thank the Sports Authority of India, the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, and the Government of India for their continuous support, which has helped India establish itself as one of the most reliable hosts for world-class shooting competitions.”

India’s growing influence in world shooting

India’s rise as a shooting superpower is no longer limited to medal tallies. It is now reflected in governance, hosting trust, and calendar influence.

The country’s shooters delivered three medals at the Paris 2024 Olympics, accounting for half of India’s total medal haul at the Games a performance that immediately elevated India’s standing within the global shooting community. Since then, international federations have repeatedly turned to India to stage their biggest events a sign that the country is now seen as both a competitive and administrative leader in the sport.

With Olympic qualification pathways becoming increasingly competitive and restrictive, hosting quota events is invaluable. At the Asian Rifle/Pistol Championship 2027, eight shooters across rifle and pistol disciplines will secure direct Olympic berths. Meanwhile, the ISSF World Cup 2027 will distribute 12 more quota places across rifle, pistol and shotgun. For India, this creates multiple chances to lock in Olympic tickets without having to rely solely on world championships or overseas qualifiers.

It also allows selectors to plan athlete peaks, competition schedules and equipment cycles with precision something that becomes critical in a high-pressure Olympic qualification year.

Beyond India, the 2027 Asian Championships will bring together the continent’s strongest shooting nations including Korea, Kazakhstan, China, Japan, Iran and Chinese Taipei making it one of the most competitive events of the Olympic cycle. For spectators and young shooters in India, it will also be a rare opportunity to watch Asia’s elite compete live, reinforcing the grassroots-to-elite pathway that Indian shooting has been building.

With the Asian Championships 2026 already underway in Delhi and two major Olympic quota events secured for 2027, India has firmly positioned itself as the epicentre of Asian shooting on the road to Los Angeles 2028.

For Indian shooters, the message is clear: the Olympic road will run straight through New Delhi.
