The Indian women’s hockey team continued its positive start at the FIH Hockey World Cup Qualifiers in Hyderabad, playing out a competitive 2–2 draw against Scotland in their second Pool B match at the G.M.C. Balayogi Hockey Ground on Monday.

With the result, both teams moved to four points from two matches, but India retained the top position in Pool B due to a superior goal difference. Goals from Navneet Kaur and Sunelita Toppo helped the hosts fight back after Scotland had taken an early lead, while the visitors responded through Heather McEwan and Fiona Burnet to secure a share of the spoils.

Scotland Strike Early

The match began cautiously with both teams focusing on patient passing and building attacks from the back. India lined up in an attacking 3-4-3 formation, aiming to dominate possession and stretch Scotland’s defensive structure. However, the visitors struck first after capitalising on a defensive lapse. In the sixth minute, Scotland won the first penalty corner of the match when India briefly lost their defensive shape. Heather McEwan stepped up and guided the ball into the net with precision to give Scotland a 1–0 lead.

The early goal forced India to respond with greater urgency. Lalremsiami soon earned India’s first penalty corner, but Udita’s drag-flick went wide, allowing Scotland to hold onto their advantage.

India continued to push forward and created another opportunity in the 14th minute, winning a second penalty corner. However, a trapping error disrupted the move and Scotland launched a dangerous counterattack before Sushila Chanu intervened to clear the ball and prevent further damage.

India Respond Through Navneet

The hosts began the second quarter with renewed energy and quickly found their rhythm in attack. India earned their third penalty corner in the 17th minute, and although the initial trap was once again imperfect, Navneet Kaur reacted quickly. Positioned perfectly inside the circle, Navneet smashed the loose ball past Scottish goalkeeper Jessica Buchanan in the 18th minute to level the scores at 1–1.

Scotland attempted to respond immediately, winning another penalty corner in the 22nd minute. This time, however, Indian goalkeeper Bichu Devi produced an excellent save to deny Amy Costello’s drag-flick. The match was beginning to open up, with both teams creating frequent circle entries. Scotland increased their pressing intensity, but India absorbed the pressure well before striking again.

Sunelita Toppo Gives India the Lead

India took the lead just before halftime following another penalty corner opportunity. The initial attempt struck the woodwork and the ball rebounded into the circle, creating a chaotic scramble in front of goal. Sunelita Toppo showed excellent awareness, reacting quickest to the loose ball and tapping it into the net in the 29th minute to give India a 2–1 advantage.

The goal capped a strong spell for the hosts, who entered the break with momentum firmly on their side.

Their persistence paid off in the 33rd minute when a well-constructed passing move created space inside the Indian circle. Heather McEwan turned provider this time, setting up Fiona Burnet, who finished clinically to restore parity at 2–2. Following the equaliser, Scotland dominated possession for several minutes and forced India onto the defensive. However, the hosts gradually regained composure and began to push forward again.

India’s attacking play nearly yielded another goal when Lalremsiami and Rutuja combined well to win a penalty corner. What followed was an intense period of pressure as India earned three consecutive penalty corners, but Scotland’s defence held firm during a frantic goalmouth battle.

Final Quarter Produces End-to-End Action

The fourth quarter began with India immediately earning another penalty corner, but Jessica Buchanan once again produced a strong save to keep Scotland level. The tempo of the match increased significantly as both teams searched for a decisive goal. India looked particularly dangerous through quick attacking runs and overlapping movement.

Midway through the quarter, Baljeet Kaur made an impressive run into the Scottish circle, but there was no teammate available to apply the finishing touch. India continued to push forward and won their ninth penalty corner of the match with just a few minutes remaining. The rebound fell kindly inside the circle, but Buchanan remained alert to make another crucial save and deny the hosts.

Despite a flurry of late attacks from India, Scotland’s defensive resilience ensured the match ended 2–2.

India Stay on Top of Pool B

While India were unable to secure all three points, the draw was enough to keep them at the top of Pool B thanks to their superior goal difference. The result also highlighted the team’s attacking depth, with Navneet Kaur and Sunelita Toppo both continuing their impressive form in the tournament.

India will now turn their attention to their next Pool B clash against Wales on March 11, which could prove decisive in determining the group standings and qualification pathway. With strong crowd support in Hyderabad and momentum from their opening performances, the hosts remain well placed to push for a place in the knockout rounds of the FIH Hockey Women’s World Cup 2026 Qualifiers.
