The Indian women’s volleyball team is set to return to continental competition as they prepare to compete in the AVC womens Nations Cup 2025, to be held in Hanoi, Vietnam from June 7 to 14.

Drawn into a challenging Group A, India will face higher-ranked and seasoned opponents, but will aim to build on past performances and regain a spot on the podium.

The Tournament

Organized by the Asian Volleyball Confederation (AVC), the Nations Cup is a prestigious annual event for developing and mid-ranked teams in the continent. This year’s edition brings together 12 nations split across two pools, with the top teams advancing to the knockout rounds.

Group A – The Challenge Ahead

India has been drawn into Group A, which includes:

  • 🇻🇳 Vietnam (World Rank: 32) – Defending champions and host nation
  • 🇹🇼 Chinese Taipei (WR: 45)
  • 🇦🇺 Australia (WR: 55)
  • 🇮🇳 India (WR: 53)
  • 🇭🇰 Hong Kong (WR: 60)

Vietnam, ranked 21 places above India and playing at home, will be the favorites to top the group. Meanwhile, Chinese Taipei and Australia are well-drilled teams with strong defensive systems, making India’s path to the semifinals a stiff one. However, India’s position above Australia and Hong Kong in the world rankings gives them a reasonable shot at advancing, provided they play consistent volleyball across all matches.

India’s Recent Record at AVC Nations Cup

India has shown flashes of promise in this tournament over the last three editions:

  • 🥈 2022 – Silver Medal (India’s best performance to date)
  • 🏅 2023 – Fourth Place
  • 📉 2024 – Fifth Place

Despite a drop in standings over the last two years, India remains a competitive force in the Asian second tier. With a blend of youth and experience in the squad, 2025 presents an opportunity to reverse the downward trend and return to medal contention.

Group B – The Other Side

While India battles through Group A, Group B features a slightly larger field:

  • 🇰🇿 Kazakhstan
  • 🇵🇭 Philippines
  • 🇮🇷 Iran
  • 🇮🇩 Indonesia
  • 🇲🇳 Mongolia
  • 🇳🇿 New Zealand

Kazakhstan and the Philippines will likely be the dominant teams in this pool, with Iran and Indonesia pushing for surprise semifinal spots. The top two teams from each group will progress to the semifinals, followed by classification matches for final rankings.

Key Factors for India

  1. Consistency in Serve-Receive: Against teams like Vietnam and Taipei, who thrive on quick middle plays, India’s first touch will be crucial. Any lapse in reception could quickly tip the balance in favor of the opposition.
  2. Middle Block Execution: India has the height and athleticism in the middle but often lacks the timing to disrupt quick sets. Improved blocking coordination could tilt close sets.
  3. Finishing Under Pressure: One of India’s recurring issues has been dropping sets after building early leads. Closing out points with composure—especially in the 20s—will be key to progressing from the group.
  4. Fitness and Squad Depth: The compact schedule means India will play multiple matches over the course of a week. Rotational depth and recovery management will be crucial to sustaining performance.

Why This Tournament Matters

For many of these teams, especially India, the AVC Nations Cup serves as both a proving ground and a platform to gain crucial international exposure. It’s a rare opportunity for Indian players to go head-to-head against similarly ranked sides and refine their skills in a competitive environment outside South Asia.

Moreover, performances here could influence future selections and FIVB world ranking points, which in turn affect eligibility for larger events like the Asian Games, Challenger Cups, and eventually, World Championship qualifiers.

Schedule and Next Steps

India starts campaign against HongKong on 8th June then plays Australia the next day.

Then after a day break we play Vietnam and the last group stage match against Chinese Taipei.

As they head into the tournament, India will look to draw confidence from their 2022 silver medal run and aim to rediscover that rhythm in Hanoi.
