The Indian women’s hockey team will step onto the field with a place in the semi-finals of the FIH Hockey World Cup Qualifiers on the line when they face Wales in their final Pool B match in Hyderabad on March 11.
After an encouraging start to the tournament, the hosts currently sit top of the pool with four points, and a win or draw will guarantee them a spot in the last four. The stakes are clear heading into the final group-stage encounter. The top two teams from Pool B advance to the semi-finals, and India are in a strong position to secure qualification after their performances in the opening two matches.
Strong Start to the Campaign
India began their campaign in emphatic fashion with a dominant 4–0 victory over Uruguay on March 8, displaying attacking intent and control throughout the contest. Goals from Sunelita Toppo, Ishika, Lalremsiami, and Rutuja Dadaso Pisal ensured the hosts started the tournament on a confident note.
The Indian forwards were particularly impressive, constantly creating pressure inside the opposition circle and converting chances efficiently. The performance highlighted the team’s attacking depth and ability to control games against lower-ranked opposition.
India followed that victory with a hard-fought 2–2 draw against Scotland, a match that tested the team’s resilience and defensive discipline. Despite going behind early, the hosts fought back through goals from Navneet Kaur and Sunelita Toppo, ensuring they remained unbeaten in the tournament.

With those results, India now have four points and a superior goal difference, placing them at the top of Pool B heading into the final group match.
Qualification Scenario
India’s qualification equation is straightforward. A win or a draw against Wales will ensure that the hosts progress to the semi-finals without relying on other results. However, a defeat would complicate matters. If India lose to Wales, they will remain on four points and their qualification hopes will depend on the outcome of the Scotland vs Uruguay match. In that scenario, goal difference could become the deciding factor.
Given India’s current goal difference advantage, the team still holds a favourable position, but the players will be keen to avoid leaving their fate to mathematical calculations.
Attack Leading the Charge
India’s attacking unit has been one of the standout aspects of their campaign so far.
Young forward Sunelita Toppo has been in exceptional form, scoring in both matches and emerging as one of the team’s key attacking threats. Her sharp positioning and ability to react quickly inside the circle have given India a valuable edge in front of goal. Alongside Toppo, experienced attackers Lalremsiami, Navneet Kaur, and Rutuja Dadaso Pisal have played vital roles in India’s attacking play. Their pace and movement have created numerous opportunities, while their finishing has ensured the team remains among the highest-scoring sides in the tournament so far.
The attacking combination of youth and experience has provided India with multiple scoring options, making them a difficult team to defend against.

India’s defence has also been impressive across the first two matches. While the team conceded twice against Scotland, the backline showed resilience under pressure and managed to limit the number of clear scoring chances.
Goalkeeper Bichu Devi has been a key figure in that defensive effort. Her calm presence and crucial saves have helped India maintain control in difficult moments. The defensive unit, supported by disciplined midfield play, has ensured India remain competitive even when opponents have attempted to dominate possession.
Home Advantage in Hyderabad
Playing in front of a passionate home crowd at the G.M.C. Balayogi Hockey Ground in Hyderabad has provided India with an additional boost. The energy from the stands has played a noticeable role in motivating the players and pushing them to maintain a high level of intensity.
Captain Salima Tete acknowledged the positive atmosphere within the squad following the opening matches. “After the opening two games, there is positivity in the team. The young players are taking their opportunity and have been doing very well. The team is relishing playing freely, and that is a very good thing for us,” she said.
The captain also emphasised the team’s long-term objective. “We want to qualify for the World Cup and become champions. That’s what we talk about when the team is together and that’s our goal,” she added.

Although India enter the match as favourites, Wales will be determined to challenge the hosts and secure their own place in the semi-finals.
Historically, India have enjoyed a strong record against Wales, leading the head-to-head meetings 5–1. However, the Welsh team will be eager to register their first win of the campaign and keep their qualification hopes alive.
For India, the focus will be on maintaining discipline, capitalising on scoring opportunities, and avoiding defensive lapses.
Eyes on the Semi-Finals
With qualification within reach, the Indian women’s hockey team will aim to finish the pool stage strongly and continue their unbeaten run in the tournament. A positive result against Wales would not only secure a semi-final berth but also strengthen India’s confidence as they move closer to their ultimate objective qualifying for the 2026 FIH Women’s Hockey World Cup.
As the final group-stage clash approaches, the stage is set for a high-stakes encounter in Hyderabad, with the Blue Tigresses determined to keep their World Cup dreams firmly on track.
