The Indian women’s hockey team made an emphatic start to their campaign at the FIH Hockey World Cup Qualifiers 2026, defeating Uruguay 4–0 at the G. M. C. Balayogi Hockey Ground in Hyderabad on Sunday.
Goals from Sunelita Toppo, Ishika, Lalremsiami, and Rutuja Dadaso Pisal ensured India began the tournament with a convincing victory in front of home supporters. The result provided a strong boost to the hosts’ hopes of securing qualification for the FIH Women’s Hockey World Cup 2026.
India dominated possession and attacking play for large spells of the match, controlling the tempo from the opening whistle and creating numerous scoring opportunities.
India apply early pressure
The hosts began the match brightly, pressing high and making several circle entries during the opening quarter. Their attacking intent earned them the first penalty corner of the contest in the fourth minute. Defender Udita briefly thought she had given India the lead after finishing a cleverly worked variation from the penalty corner routine. However, the attempt was ruled out as the ball had travelled above the permitted height before entering the goal.
Despite the early setback, India continued to push forward with quick passing and aggressive pressing. Uruguay attempted to counterattack on a few occasions but struggled to break through India’s organised defence.

India’s sustained pressure finally produced a breakthrough in the 21st minute.
After winning another penalty corner, the home side created confusion inside the Uruguayan defence. Sunelita Toppo reacted quickly to a loose ball following the initial effort and calmly tapped the rebound into the net to give India a 1–0 lead.
The goal lifted India’s momentum, and they continued to control possession through the remainder of the second quarter. Five minutes later, India earned another penalty corner, but Annu’s drag-flick was successfully blocked by the Uruguayan defence.
Uruguay did manage to earn their first penalty corner of the match in the 29th minute, but India’s defensive unit responded swiftly to neutralise the threat and maintain their narrow lead heading into halftime.
Ishika doubles India’s advantage
India continued to dominate after the restart and nearly scored again in the 36th minute. Navneet Kaur found herself unmarked in front of goal following a quick attacking move, but Uruguay goalkeeper Maria Bate stepped off her line to make an impressive save. The second goal eventually arrived in the 40th minute through a well-constructed attacking move.
Sakshi Rana delivered an excellent pass into the circle, finding Ishika in space. The forward showed composure and precision, guiding her shot into the bottom-left corner to double India’s lead.

Uruguay were awarded a penalty corner shortly afterward but once again failed to convert the opportunity as India’s defence held firm.
Lalremsiami produces a moment of brilliance
India further extended their advantage in the 49th minute with one of the standout goals of the match. Rutuja Dadaso Pisal made an impressive run down the left flank before delivering a well-timed pass to Lalremsiami in midfield. The forward carried the ball confidently into the circle and unleashed a powerful strike that beat the goalkeeper.
The superb field goal gave India a 3–0 lead and effectively placed the match beyond Uruguay’s reach. India maintained their attacking intent during the closing stages and added a fourth goal in the 58th minute.
Rutuja Dadaso Pisal, who had already provided an assist earlier in the match, completed an excellent individual performance by scoring herself. She dribbled through the centre of the field before unleashing a powerful shot that found the back of the net. The goal sealed a 4–0 victory for the hosts and highlighted India’s attacking depth, with four different players finding the scoresheet.
The win represents an ideal start for India in the qualification tournament, where consistency and goal difference can play a crucial role in determining advancement. India’s attacking movement, quick transitions, and disciplined defending were key factors behind the convincing result.
Equally encouraging was the performance of the younger players in the squad, who showed confidence and composure on a major stage.
