Former champions Gokulam Kerala FC were held to a 1-1 draw by Namdhari Sports Academy in the Indian Football League, IFL 2025–26 season at the Payyanad Stadium in Manjeri on Saturday.

Goals from Thabiso Nelson Brown and Seilenthang Lotjem ensured the teams shared the spoils, with both sides now registering their second consecutive draw of the campaign. Despite dominating large portions of the first half, Gokulam Kerala were unable to hold on to their advantage as Namdhari fought back after the break to secure a valuable away point.

Gokulam Start on the Front Foot

Playing their home fixture in front of the Manjeri crowd, Gokulam Kerala began the match with clear attacking intent. Head coach Derick Pereira made two changes to his starting lineup, bringing in Thabiso Nelson Brown and Aman CK to bolster the attack.

From the opening whistle, the Malabarians controlled possession and dictated the pace of the game. Much of their creativity came through captain Francisco Perdomo Borges, who orchestrated play from midfield and frequently switched the ball across the pitch to stretch the Namdhari defence.

Namdhari, coached by Harpreet Singh, focused on maintaining defensive shape during the early exchanges. Their backline remained disciplined, while goalkeeper Niraj Kumar was called into action to deal with Gokulam’s attacking moves. Although the visitors struggled to create clear scoring opportunities, they remained organised and waited patiently for chances to counterattack.

Gokulam’s sustained pressure finally paid off in the 33rd minute. A well-constructed move from midfield saw Francisco Perdomo Borges deliver a perfectly timed assist into the penalty area. Thabiso Nelson Brown reacted swiftly, producing a sharp finish that left the Namdhari goalkeeper with little chance.

The goal gave the hosts a deserved 1-0 lead and energised the home crowd. For Brown, it was a crucial contribution in his return to the starting lineup, justifying the faith shown by Pereira in the attacking reshuffle.

Following the goal, Namdhari attempted to respond before halftime, increasing their tempo and pushing players forward. However, Gokulam’s defence held firm, allowing the hosts to enter the break with a narrow advantage.

Namdhari Fight Back After the Break

The momentum shifted noticeably in the second half.

Namdhari began to play with greater urgency, utilising the wings to stretch Gokulam’s defensive structure. Their attacking patterns improved as they looked to exploit spaces left by the home side’s advanced midfield line. Recognising the need for fresh attacking impetus, Harpreet Singh introduced Senegalese forward Abdoulaye Diallo from the bench.

The substitution proved decisive.

Diallo’s presence added pace and physicality to Namdhari’s attack, forcing Gokulam’s defenders to retreat deeper and creating space for the midfield runners. Namdhari’s persistence finally paid off in the 73rd minute. Diallo played a key role in the equaliser, delivering a clever assist into the penalty area for Seilenthang Lotjem. The forward kept his composure and slotted the ball into the net to bring the visitors level at 1-1.

The goal marked a turning point in the match, as the visitors suddenly gained confidence and began to push for a possible winner. For Lotjem, the strike was a reward for Namdhari’s improved attacking display in the second half.

With the score tied entering the final stages, both teams searched desperately for a winning goal. Gokulam head coach Derick Pereira attempted to regain control by making an attacking substitution in the 85th minute, bringing on Rishad in place of Mirjalol Kasimov. The final minutes of the match were played at a frantic pace. Both sides pushed forward, creating several half-chances inside the penalty areas.

The referee added six minutes of stoppage time, raising hopes of a dramatic late winner. However, despite the end-to-end action, neither team was able to find the decisive breakthrough.

The match ultimately ended 1-1, with both teams forced to settle for a point. The result means that both Gokulam Kerala and Namdhari Sports Academy have now recorded two consecutive draws to begin their Indian Football League campaign.

For Gokulam Kerala, the outcome may feel slightly disappointing given their dominance in the first half and home advantage. However, the performance also highlighted several positives, particularly their midfield control and attacking creativity during the opening stages of the match.

Namdhari, on the other hand, will take confidence from their second-half resilience and ability to recover after conceding the opening goal.

Early Season Still Taking Shape

With the season still in its early stages, both teams will view the draw as an opportunity to build momentum for the matches ahead.

Gokulam Kerala will aim to convert their attacking dominance into victories in upcoming fixtures, while Namdhari will look to continue their disciplined performances and turn draws into wins. As the Indian Football League season progresses, performances like this underline the competitive nature of the league, where even small margins can determine the outcome of tightly contested matches.

For now, both sides walk away from Manjeri with a point and plenty to build on in the weeks ahead.
