Indian distance running will once again take centre stage as national record holder Gulveer Singh headlines the domestic elite field at the 18th edition of the TCS World 10K Bengaluru, scheduled for April 26.

A World Athletics Gold Label Race, the event continues to serve as one of the most significant platforms for Indian runners to compete against world-class opposition on home soil.

For Gulveer, the race arrives at a crucial point in his career. The 26-year-old enters the competition in peak form, carrying momentum from a strong international showing earlier this month at the New York City Half Marathon, where he finished third with a time of 59:42. The performance not only marked a podium finish at a high-profile event but also established the fastest half-marathon timing ever recorded by an Indian.

A season built on consistency

Gulveer’s rise over the past year has been defined by both performance metrics and consistency across distances. As the national record holder in the 10,000m (27:00.22) and 5000m (12:59.77), he has established himself as India’s premier long-distance runner across track events.

His 2025 season was particularly notable. Gulveer secured double gold at the Asian Athletics Championships, dominating both the 5,000m and 10,000m events. He also transitioned effectively to road racing, setting an event record of 1:12:06 at the Tata Steel World 25K Kolkata.

This versatility across track and road places him in a unique position heading into the Bengaluru race, which demands not only endurance but also race intelligence against a fast-moving international field.

“The TCS World 10K Bengaluru is one of the most competitive races in the country. It’s always a great opportunity to test myself,” Gulveer said ahead of the event.

The TCS World 10K is widely regarded as India’s premier road race, both in terms of field quality and course competitiveness. As a Gold Label event, it attracts elite runners from Africa and Europe, many of whom bring sub-28 minute 10K credentials.

This year is no exception. The international lineup includes Uganda’s Harbert Kibet, Kenya’s Vincent Langat, Ethiopia’s Gemechu Dida, and Eritrea’s Samuel Habte names that underline the depth and pace expected on race day.

For Indian runners, competing in such a field presents both a challenge and an opportunity. The pace set by international athletes often pushes domestic runners beyond their comfort zones, resulting in improved timings and exposure to elite racing conditions.

Gulveer acknowledged this dynamic. “Competing against such strong athletes motivates us to push harder. It’s also important for inspiring young runners in India,” he noted.

A key year in the athletics calendar

The timing of the race is particularly significant. With both the Commonwealth Games and Asian Games scheduled later in the year, the Bengaluru 10K serves as an early-season benchmark for athletes. Performances here will provide critical insights into fitness levels, race strategies, and adaptation to competitive pacing factors that will influence preparations for major championships.

Gulveer, who has already demonstrated his ability to perform on the continental stage, will be looking to use this race as a stepping stone towards those larger targets.

“Events like this are very important for the ecosystem, especially in a year where we are focusing on major competitions,” he said.

Indian elite field: Chasing breakthroughs

While Gulveer leads the Indian contingent, the race will also feature a competitive domestic field aiming to close the gap with global standards. Over the past few years, Indian distance running has seen incremental improvements, particularly in endurance events.

However, the gap between Indian and global elite timings remains significant. Races like the TCS World 10K provide a rare opportunity for Indian athletes to benchmark themselves directly against the best.

The presence of prize incentives further adds to the competitive edge. The event offers a total prize purse of USD 210,000, with USD 26,000 awarded to the winners in both men’s and women’s categories. Indian elite runners will also compete for a separate prize pool, with INR 3 lakh for top finishers and an additional INR 1 lakh for a new event record.

The significance of the TCS World 10K extends beyond elite competition. The event has played a key role in promoting road running culture in India, bridging the gap between recreational participation and elite performance. For athletes like Gulveer, the race represents both personal ambition and a broader responsibility to push the boundaries of Indian distance running and set new benchmarks.

What to expect on race day

Given his current form, Gulveer will enter the race as the strongest Indian contender. The primary objective will likely be twofold: achieving a competitive finishing position within the international field and potentially targeting a personal best over the distance.

However, the unpredictable nature of road racing combined with the high pace set by international runners means that execution will be critical. Positioning, pacing, and the ability to sustain speed in the final kilometres will determine outcomes.

As April 26 approaches, the focus will increasingly shift towards Bengaluru, where one of India’s finest distance runners will take on a global field in pursuit of performance and progression. For Gulveer Singh, the race is not just another competition it is a defining test in a season that could shape his trajectory heading into the Commonwealth and Asian Games.

In a sport where margins are measured in seconds, the Bengaluru 10K offers a stage where those seconds can translate into statements.
