In a tightly contested top-of-the-table clash, Sreenidi Deccan FC and Shillong Lajong FC played out a goalless draw at the Deccan Arena, with both sides showcasing defensive discipline and goalkeeping excellence in the Star Cement Indian Football League (IFL) 2025-26.

Coming into the match level on points, the encounter carried significant weight in the early title race. While neither side managed to find the breakthrough, the intensity and tactical battle on display underlined why both teams are among the frontrunners this season. The result sees Sreenidi Deccan edge to the top of the table with 11 points, while Shillong Lajong remain just behind, level with Rajasthan United.

Tactical Battle Defines First Half

The match began with Sreenidi Deccan asserting control through possession. Head coach Carlos Vaz Pinto introduced Rolieny Bonevacia and Brandon Vanlalremdika into midfield, a move that allowed the hosts to dominate central areas early on.

Despite enjoying more of the ball, Sreenidi found it difficult to break down Shillong’s compact defensive structure. The visitors, under Birendra Thapa, maintained their shape effectively, closing down spaces and forcing Sreenidi into long-range efforts.

The first real chance came in the 11th minute when Sreenidi captain David Castañeda attempted his luck from distance. However, Shillong goalkeeper Siwel Rymbai was equal to the task, producing a sharp save to deny the opener.

Shillong gradually settled into the contest and began to pose a threat on the counter. Everbrightson Sana Mylliempdah was particularly lively, using his pace to trouble the Sreenidi backline. The visitors’ best chance of the half came in stoppage time, when Phrangki Buam struck a powerful free-kick from distance. Sreenidi goalkeeper Kamaljit Singh responded with a spectacular diving save, ensuring the teams went into the break level.

The second half followed a similar narrative, with Sreenidi controlling possession and Shillong looking to capitalise on transitions. However, the defining feature of the game remained the performances of the two goalkeepers.

Castañeda once again found himself in a promising position just before the hour mark but failed to direct his effort on target. Moments later, substitute Paulo Cézar tested Rymbai, only to be denied by another alert intervention from the Shillong custodian.

At the other end, Shillong continued to create half-chances through Sana and substitute Abhay Gurung. Yet, the final touch eluded them, as Sreenidi’s defensive unit held firm.

Late Push Fails to Produce Breakthrough

As the match entered its final stages, both sides showed greater urgency in search of a winner. The tempo increased, and the game opened up slightly, offering glimpses of attacking intent from both teams.

Sreenidi came closest to breaking the deadlock in the 86th minute. Pape Gassama delivered a well-weighted free-kick into the box, finding Paulo Cézar in a dangerous position. The forward’s header seemed destined for the net, but Rymbai produced an outstanding save, arguably the moment of the match, to keep Shillong level.

Shillong, too, looked dangerous in transition during the closing minutes but were unable to create a clear-cut opportunity to test Kamaljit again.

While the attacking units struggled to convert chances, both defences deserve significant credit. Sreenidi’s backline remained organised against Shillong’s counter-attacks, while Shillong’s defensive discipline ensured they were rarely exposed despite sustained pressure.

The midfield battle also played a crucial role, with both teams prioritising structure over risk. This resulted in a game where clear chances were limited, but the tactical quality remained high.

Goalkeepers Steal the Spotlight

Ultimately, the match belonged to the goalkeepers. Kamaljit Singh’s crucial saves, particularly the one from Buam’s free-kick, ensured Sreenidi stayed in the contest, while Siwel Rymbai’s series of interventions, including the late stop from Cézar, earned Shillong a valuable point.

Kamaljit was rightly named Player of the Match, but Rymbai’s performance was equally influential in shaping the outcome.

What It Means Going Forward

For Sreenidi Deccan, the draw extends their unbeaten run and keeps them at the summit, though they may feel they missed an opportunity to secure all three points at home. Shillong Lajong, meanwhile, will take confidence from their defensive solidity and ability to compete against one of the league’s strongest sides away from home.

As the league progresses, encounters like this where margins are fine and defensive organisation is key could prove decisive in the title race.

The goalless draw may not reflect a high-scoring spectacle, but it was a match rich in tactical nuance and individual brilliance in goal. With both teams evenly matched, it was fitting that neither could find a way past two outstanding goalkeepers, as Sreenidi Deccan and Shillong Lajong settled for a point each in a gripping contest.
