The third season of the Global Chess League, GCL Season 3 burst into life at the iconic Royal Opera House with emphatic statements from two title contenders.
upGrad Mumba Masters thrilled the home crowd with a commanding 17–4 victory over Ganges Grandmasters, while defending champions Triveni Continental Kings opened their campaign with a hard-fought 9–7 win against Alpine SG Pipers on an action-packed opening day.
Kings Edge Pipers in High-Quality Opener
The season curtain-raiser featured the reigning champions against one of the most balanced line-ups in the league, and it lived up to expectations. All eyes were on the icon board clash between Alireza Firouzja and Fabiano Caruana, where Caruana, playing Black, chose the aggressive Sicilian Dragon in search of maximum points. The gamble proved costly. Firouzja calmly absorbed the pressure, sacrificed material at the right moment, and converted his positional advantage in the endgame to deliver a crucial win.
Pipers, however, struck first through Nino Batsiashvili, who defeated Alexandra Kosteniuk with Black, capitalising on central control and time pressure to secure a valuable four-point haul. The momentum swing came courtesy of Wei Yi, who outplayed Anish Giri in a sharp Vienna Game, tilting the tie back in the Kings’ favour.

The much-anticipated all-Indian clash between Vidit Gujrathi and R Praggnanandhaa ended in a tense draw, as did the women’s top-board encounter between Zhu Jiner and Hou Yifan, and the prodigy battle between Marc’Andria Maurizzi and Leon Mendonca. Firouzja’s decisive contribution earned him Player of the Match, as Kings showed composure and depth to start their title defence on the right note.
Mumba Masters Put on a Clinic at Home
If the Kings’ win was about control under pressure, the upGrad Mumba Masters’ performance was sheer dominance. Backed by a vocal home crowd, the Masters dismantled Viswanathan Anand’s Ganges Grandmasters with authority. The tone was set on the icon board where Maxime Vachier-Lagrave, playing Black, outplayed Anand to give the hosts an early psychological edge. The prodigy board soon followed suit as Bardiya Daneshvar capitalised on a costly error from Raunak Sadhwani, pushing Mumba Masters into a commanding 4–0 lead.

Although Wesley So and Vincent Keymer fought out a perpetual-check draw, the damage had already been done. The Masters’ superstar contingent took over from there. Harika Dronavalli converted her positional advantage with clinical precision, while Shakhriyar Mamedyarov showcased his trademark attacking flair to stretch the lead further.
Ganges Grandmasters found a brief spark through Polina Shuvalova, who defeated Koneru Humpy after dictating play from the centre to claim their only win of the tie. Any hopes of a fightback were quickly extinguished as Harika and Mamedyarov closed out their games, sealing an emphatic 17–4 result. GCL debutant Wesley So was named Man of the Match, reflecting the depth and balance of the Mumba Masters lineup.
