Indian junior tennis enjoyed a significant boost in Melbourne on January 21 as Diya Ramesh produced one of the standout results of the Australian Open Juniors qualifying rounds.
The Chennai-based teenager stunned fourth seed and world No. 86 Anita Tu of the United States in straight sets, winning 7–5, 6–2 to move into the second round of the girls’ singles qualifying draw. For Diya, ranked 150 on the ITF Junior circuit, it was not just a victory over a higher-ranked opponent, but a statement performance on one of the biggest stages in world tennis.
Playing under the bright lights and buzzing atmosphere of the Australian Open complex, Diya showed remarkable composure and maturity for a player still finding her feet at the elite junior level. From the opening games, she set the tone with aggressive baseline hitting and confident movement, refusing to allow the American to dictate rallies. It was a performance that reflected not only her technical ability but also her growing belief that she belongs at this level.
Diya is part of the Next Level programme, an initiative of the Tamil Nadu Tennis Association supported by Bajaj Finserv, which focuses on identifying and nurturing promising young players. That structured development was on full display as she took the fight to a seeded opponent, controlling the tempo with her forehand and stepping inside the court whenever opportunities arose.
The first set was a test of both skill and nerve. Diya surged ahead to a 5–2 lead, putting herself in a strong position to close out the opener. However, Anita Tu, known for her resilience and consistency, mounted a spirited comeback, clawing her way back to 5–5 by exploiting a brief dip in Diya’s intensity. Many young players would have wavered at that point, but Diya showed impressive mental strength. She regrouped, tightened her service games, and returned to her attacking patterns to claim the set 7–5, ensuring that her early dominance was not wasted.

That crucial first set proved to be the turning point of the match. Having weathered the American’s resistance, Diya came out for the second set with even greater confidence. She held serve comfortably and then broke Tu early to race into a 2–0 lead. From there, she never looked back. By continuing to apply pressure with deep, penetrating groundstrokes and quick movement around the court, Diya forced errors from her opponent and kept her on the defensive. The second set was a more straightforward affair, with Diya sealing it 6–2 to complete a thoroughly deserved victory.
Her coach, Rajeev Vijaykumar, who has been travelling with her, was full of praise for her performance. “Diya was continuously aggressive and focused. This win will substantially increase her confidence level to do well,” he said after the match. His words summed up what was evident on court: a player who not only had a clear game plan but also the discipline to stick to it, even when the pressure rose.
Officially, the result read: [QR1] Diya Ramesh (IND, ITF Junior 150) def. (4) Anita Tu (USA, ITF Junior 86) 7–5, 6–2. But beyond the numbers, the win carried deeper significance. Upsetting a seeded player at a Grand Slam junior event is a milestone for any young tennis player, and for Diya, it could be a defining moment in her early career.
